    Re: Winter Car Suggestions...

I find I lose heat in traffic with my 1.8T - I just turn up the idle a few hundred with Vtune Gas ecomony does suffer more than I thought though.

I'm actually surprised people don't do that, the 5 Ton I used to drive at a lumber yard had an idle up knob that you'd pull (it was obviously connected to the throttle). Because it's idle was so low, it couldn't recharge things like the battery and would eventually die, and it was really hard on it not to not idle it up in the winter. i'm sure a golf/Jetta is a lot different though

we have digital high idle units on the 05 ford 3/4 tons at my work - this is what i had in mind. if the engine drops below a certain temp, it increases idle speed.

The TDI with a coolant heater is an excellent option. Starts blowing heat as soon as you're driving. Pair that with heated seats and its better, warmer, than any gas car I've ever owned.

ya, i agree that the circulating heater is the way to go. the advantage with the digital idle switches i mentioned was more for the cooling that can happen while idleing. the trucks we have idle a lot during their use (not just in morning), if the engine starts to run cool, it will pick up the idle speed to avoid the damage that can occur from idleing a diesel too much.

The trick to keeping the tdi warm in bad traffic on a cold day is to use a lower gear than you would normally use and rev it up to higher rpms than normal to work the engine. I do this with my automatic and it works fine.
