  • Help - Car won't idle

Not sure where to post this. But my car won't idle. I just installed a new clutch cable. Went for a drive, that was fine, when I got home, the car stalled, thought that that was weird. Tried to start it again but stalled again...

All sensors are hooked up, will stay running when revved up a bit. Also stayes running with the MAF unplugged, but hardly at all.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Thought it might be the fuel filter, but not sure, can't find even where it is in my bently.

    Car is a 1998 Jetta GT, 2.0 8v ABA

Well if you changed the clutch cable, i would obviously check around that area again for somthing unplugged. Also make sure your air boot is on properly at both ends. It's gotta be somthing simple that you missed.

I have no clue... I'm trying to change the fuel filter right now, it's about as much fun as doing the clutch cable. All connections are good.

          Any other ideas?

vaccume line cracked/loose? egr problem? I had the egr in my old toyota fail, and it would drive great but idle like crap. i dont even know what that car has for vaccum lines... I spent days trying to find a vaccum leak in my mazda pickup only to give up and bring it in and find out i had hooked 2 in the wrong order. obviously thats not the case with you, but if you are loosing vaccum some where it can cause such symtoms. Just thinking you could have hit a line somehow.

I'm guessing a bit, i have not worked on my vw much yet... plus its a tdi. If I come up with a more useful idea, i'll let ya know. hope its just that filter.

My egr vents into the atmosphere, I have run it like this with no problem for more than a month now... Car runs with no maf plugged in, so i think i need a new maf. I'll steal the one off my sisters jetta to see if thats my problem.
This problem just popped up, it was running well after i had installed my clutch cable.

I was just wondering, can your MAF just crap out all of a sudden? Are they know to do that when they go bad?

Re: Help - Car won't idle

Works... And Volkstech was right, it was something simple, had nothing to do with changing the cable. I had a bolt plugging a hole in the upper intake manifold and it fell out , it was messing some sensor up and wouldn't idle. All is good now though

Good to hear, I was gonna suggest an EGR problem too, my Talon TSi did that, would idle when cold, but as soon as it warmed up it would never idle.....ended up blocking it off with a plate...
