  • Winter Tires, Which One?

    Hi all,

I talked to mytires.ca and he recommended the Kumho KW19,
but I was interested also in the KW17's also.
Has anyone used any of these two models, if so
which you prefer, it will be for mainly city driving.
I cannot decided between the two.

    Thanks

Why just these two? I do highly recommend getting good winter tires, since if you slide into something just once you'll be wishing you'd bought better ice/snow tires and saved the money in the long run.

I have never heard anything good about Kumho tires. They have always faired near the bottom in the Norwegian winter tire testing.

        Here is the 2004 Testing

        English Compilation of results here

I would suggest the Nokian RSI as the best choice for Calgary.

I run Michelin Arctic Alpins in the winter... I think they are comparable to Blizzaks. Good tires!

i ran goodyear ultra grip ice last year. had them out to invermere skiing a lot, no complaints. They are a pretty deep tread, and soft rubber, so they feel a bit 'grabby' when switching lanes and such, but they plough through calgary's chinook slush like nothin'.

doesnt answer which of your choices to pick though....

The problem with this study is that if you look at Non-studded winter tires that are available in Canada, there are only 4 brands. Also, these are not comparing the so-called "performance" winter tires. For example, the WS-50 Blizzak is tested rather than the LM-25.

                Re: Winter Tires, Which One?

From a traction persepective the Nokians, Blizzaks and Arctic Alpines are similar when new. The problem with the Blizzaks and Alpines is that some of the sipes are partial depth. Once you get to 50% wear on the tires, the winter tracion goes away with the sipes. Nokian uses full depth siping and they hold traction until the tire is worn out. I know people who have had both Blizzaks and Nokians and they will never do Blizzaks again for the reasons above.

Any decent winter tire is a huge leap beyond any all season. Once you've driven on them you'll never be able to drive an all season in the winter again. It let's you drive like a crazy man all year round.

Ultra grips, Blizzaks, RSIs, arctic Alpines all all great traction tires. But like I say, go look at the sipe depth for yourselves.

                  Re: Winter Tires, Which One?

ya I guess I'm going to have to spend the extra $200 or so to get the Nokian RSI's , I was quoted $137 each, 195/65/15 , is this a good price?
the Kuhmo kw17 were $87 each,
so ya ok I guess I can't go wrong with the Nokian's.
If anyone can get them cheaper please let me know, thanks.

p.s. will I be fine with 15" steeles or should I go 16", cost wise I would prefer the
15" of course. I would be nice if I could find some VW factory 15" Al. Rims.

I will probably be getting Blizzaks this year for the Smart but I am limited to only 2 choices based upon the not so common size (Conti's are the other choice). I did have Nokians back in the day on my 97 Golf and they were great.

I use Michelin X-ice in the winter, and I have never had a problem with them. They seem to be very good on ice (hence the name I guess) as well as in the slush. The biggest reason I got them is because they are relatively quiet at higher speeds. And for anyone that goes skiing or anything alot in the winter, a quiet tire on the highway is a must.

I got a set of Hankook W300's last year and they worked great for me. Lots of traction in snow, ice and slush. They are an H rated snow tire as well, so you can still have a little fun if the roads are dry, and they dont wear super quickly on dry pavement like I found the blizzaks to. Dirt cheap too!...

                            Re: Winter Tires, Which One?

I ran the Kumho KW-19 last winter and I think they are a great tire. Then again, I have never run a dedicated winter tire before, so I don't really have much to compare it to.

From what i recall, the KW-17 offers a little more dry grip and a little more tread life at the expense of less grip in the snow/ice compared to the KW-19.

I've heard the KW-19 refered to as a Hakka knock-off. I believe the tread patterns are very similar. Some people actually think the KW-19 is a better tire. A lot of guys that compete in the CSCC winter autocross series were switching to the KW-19 and having really good results. I don't do a lot of winter autocrossing up here in Edmonton, but when I did I was the fastest 2wd car there and I beat about half of the AWD cars. (Your results may vary.)
