Strange squeeking comming from the golf

Looking for any imput on this, my fiance (sp) has a 91 golf with an 8v and it is making a strange squeeking sound when the clutch is engaged. It is very hard to duplicate it because it only happens sometimes and there is no consistancey to it happening. There does not have to be a load on the clutch either. Sometimes it happens when you are just staring out, sometimes it happens when you are up or down shifting, sometimes it happens if you just press in the clutch and give it some gas, and sometimes it is fine.
Like I said before any imput on this would be great

That would be my guess, I was waiting to hear if it's when the clutch pedal is moving or if he means clutch is fully depressed and he hears it.

i hear it in both situations when it is being released and one i heard it when i was just sitting still with clutch depressed reving the motor
