  • Changing the Timing Belt

Hey, I just picked up a 00 Passat V6, and the car has 120,000KM on it.. So I should change the Timing belt asap... and the timing belt tensioner.

Which dealer would you recommend I take it to? and what costs am I looking to pay.. I heard you can do it yourself, but I don't think its worth the risk...

It should be same book rate for any of them - I'd call the 2 closest ones though and ask what it costs for the timing belt and the water pump (do them at the same time).

      Re: Changing the Timing Belt

I dont know if the same applies for all vw's engines, but for the tdi's, the timing belt and tesioners for the newer engines are rated to last longer. Of course, you get the one built for your year when you get the work done... which was the older style belt for me. Since (at least for tdi) the block didnt change in the last few years, the belts/tensioners are completely compatible, and for not much more $$ (like less the 40$ i think) you can get the new longer lasting one put in. Might just be a TDI thing... probably pretty easy to find out, im sure someone here knows?

And yeah.. water pump replace is good idea. Sorry, no idea on cost for that engine.

I thought the v6 used a chain instead of a belt?

Did you ask about the water pump? Is the vr6 location different?

                      Re: Changing the Timing Belt

the vr6 is a completely different design than the passat/audi v6. do the water pump at the same time as it's driven by the t-belt, like the 1.8T. there are special tools required for this job.
volkstech looks like he's got it under control so good luck.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3
