I had the day off today so I decided to take a trip down to the dealer and check out the new A3, so here is what I thought....
Interior: Very nice! It feels very expensive inside. The layout is very similar to the mk4s but everything just feels tighter and classier. The car I drove was equipped with the sport package and skyview roof. The sport package makes the seats much nicer than the standard ones, they feel just about as good as my recaros, and the quality of the leather is excellent. The skyview roof is nice, but I dont think its worth the extra money. I'll take a regular sunroof please.
Driving impressions: I opted to try out one with the DSG transmission. All I can says is WOW! Holy crap does that thing shift fast! When in auto mode the shifts are so fast and smooth you dont even feel them, and there is no delay in acceleration between shifts. In manual mode the paddle shifting is a lot of fun, and responds almost instantly. I really enjoyed how it automatically rev-matches on downshifts, it looks and sounds really cool. I was extremely impressed with the overall performance of the motor. This is a very quick car, and honestly, is not that much slower than my chipped/bolt-on 1.8T. The performance potential of this car is immense. The motor has a very nice growl to it when it gets in the higher rpms and stays smooth the whole way. This in no way feels like a turbocharged car. You pin it, and power is right there with no delay. I didnt really get a chance to try out the handling, but the car rides very nicely. I has the same smooth, yet solid feel of all the other Audi's, and the steering has a nice weight to it.
Overall: I'd have to say I really enjoyed this car. The only real downside is the price. Optioned out the way I'd want it (sport package, cold weather, dsg, xenons) the car comes out to about 43k. Now keeping in mind this is still a front driver I'd say thats a little much. As of right now, there is no confirmation as to if we are getting the 2.0T in quattro form. Now if this car had quattro, I'd be sold. There is a quattro version coming in the fall, but only with the 3.2L, so it will be priced a lot higher, and with fuel prices the way they are, and the mod potential of the 2.0T, I'd much rather have the 2.0T. Now if only Audo would bring us a 2.0T Quattro A3, and price it in the mid to low 40s, I'd be sold. In the mean time, its a very nice car, but its just too much money for what it is.
