Ha ha. Very well said...and this is the exact reason that I wish I lived across the pond sometimes.

      Re: Speeding..

I am 34 and I know exactly where I can push each one of my cars to. I drive with the majority of the proper road rules in mind, fast to the left, never pass right and I will weave only when I need to get out of a situation (i.e. the herds of moron drivers that tend to form - I like there being no one around me to hit). When I get behind someone who insists on being left and puttering I, frankly, enforce my will upon them.

I see speeding tickets as the 'Driving Fast Tax'. They are not there to slow me down as they obviously haven't and there is no interest in the eyes of the police in truly slowing things down.

The amount of time I have saved in the course of my driving life is well worth the price in tickets to me. Nowadays you can always plead away the demerits on a speeding ticket.

I am less of a risk in my well maintained, particularly 'tuned' small agile cars than the proverbial soccer mom in her land yacht, with her screaming little bastards in the back, husband on the phone and smoke in her other hand.

Also if going the speed limit means that I would live as a cripple, or gimped up somehow after an accident then i will gladly take death and speeding.

Slow inattntive drivers and people on cells are by far just as dangerous as speeders as long as it is not ecessive speed and driving like a fool eg. passing on a doulble solid on a corner over a bridge and a big line up of cars over Rogers Pass its fine by me I had to re take my driving test last year (No not do to tickets) and the proper way the tell you to drive you would get no where at all

If by selfish you mean "regarding one's own comfort, advantage, etc., in disregard, or at the expense, of those of others" then no, I disagree that speeders are selfish.

I believe you can speed without disregard of or disadvantage to other drivers on the road. I am not sure what disadvantage that you imply is being brought upon the non-speeders universally by all other speeders.

The traditional argument is that speeders are making the road less safe for non-speeders. However, as already discussed, it is not likely that this is universally true; rather it is only true in some circumstances. Therefore you should take issue with those drivers who exhibit poor judgement, but not those drivers who exceed the somewhat-arbitrarilly-decided government speed limit.

your right man even by going over 10-20km/h over the limit, your still just barely keeping up with the flow of traffic

                Re: Speeding..

i wont speed around town, im scared of smoking a dip in the road with my oilpan. but let me wind up the VR on the highway and i will happily see the fun side of the 200 mark on the GTi once and a while. you can cruise comfertably on the highway out to banff when its empty doing 180 without ANY issues.

there is a difference between excessive speeding and wreckless driving in my books. driving quick down an empty highway is one thing, weaving in and out of traffic, cutting people off, and disregarding anyone on the roads safety is stupid. you dont even have to be going that fast to drive wrecklessly.

                  Re: Speeding..

Seeing as how I have driven almost all over the states and europe i just think that if anyone wants a drivers license then they have to go to europe (germany, Hungary, italy ect... and if they manage to drive their and stay alive for 1 week then they qualify...but if they have one fender bender or whatever then too bad. The reason that I say that...and sorry for generalizing but most of these people in this country are morons...I guess that comon sence hasnt reached this country yet.

Yes I andmit that I do speed and most times no I dont do the speed limit..I have no excuses or going to defend myself....its not right but hey like people have been saying a soccer mom or someone on their cell is just as bad if not worse then me....so until cops start giving people tickets for being morons i will continue to speed.

P.S. I dont go more then 20 over unless their is noone around. I am 25, and was taught to drive in europe. I know that doesnt give me the license to speed but hey I lived!!!

I think at the very least everyone should ahve to take a writen test/eye test every 10 years. We also have a problem of 60+yr olds who haven't taken a driving test is 50+ years and have no idea what the new road laws are. We also need to follow Britians laws on cell phone use, get caught, get a HUGE fine.

                      Re: Speeding..

next time you're pulled over on the crow, ask the cop how many drivers he got doing 100. none. he got you doing 110. so its ok to do 20 over but not 30 over? who really has the say in what speed is safe or not. it seems, unfortunately, that life happens too fast to care about how fast your going. driving fast tax. i like that. they've got me for that at least 15 times. hmmmmm...can i write that off?
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

I was a little nervous about posting this one--not sure what everyone would think of what I said... I was pleasantly surprised by the response--the opionions were well stated, and well presented. I wasn't trying to judge, really just wanted to get into the mindset of wanting to go that fast. As was well stated, if you know how to handle a vehicle at any speed, you are def. less of a risk. Because I DON'T know how drive fast with the necessary knowledge, I will always be scared silly if I am driving too fast. Props to you all for your input!!! (and I loved Ryan's input about being young and invincible!!)

OK, I thought this thread was pretty entertaining. I drive over the limit myself. But the thing that surprised me, being in a euro-lovin' forum is that only 1 guy talked about driving in europe! I just read/saw/heard (can't remember) in EU, a country that has highways with no posted limits, the death toll is still much lower than north america.

I believe reckless driving is the real killer. Impaired driving, whether it be under the influence, or just being tired, on a cell, etc. Slalom, you said you were uneasy about going 145, but I'll bet you were alert. That's what speed normally will do, get the adrenaline going, stop you from blinking, etc. When you're tired or DUI, you don't have that, so then you have to make a quick decision, and it's too late.

It's not the speed that's the problem, it's the human being behind the wheel...

These cars are built to be driven fast. What is the point of all the aftermarket mods if you are not going to be able to enjoy them.

YOU ARE ONLY SPEEDING IF YOU GET CAUGHT! (IMO)
