  • Bought an OBDII code reader/eraser

I managed to throw a code on my car yesterday. Since I just had my car at the dealer on Friday, I didn't really feel like going back there anytime soon. Also, since I do have a few things mildly modded, I wanted to see what the code was first. So I went to Canadian Tire and picked up one of these things:

I'll assume that there are some of you guys out there with the VAGcom software on your laptops, but if anyone needs a code read/erased, let me know! I got it, might as well use it.

Honestly for the $100 or something that that costs I think you are better off buying a cheap laptop (ie really old) and making or buying a cheap vag cable. That way you can always pay for a registered version of vag-com (so you can do adaptions etc) if you need it plus you don't have to look up codes.
Just my $0.02 but then again I am biast a bit

It's definitely not the best product out there, but for now it'll do fine. I'm thinking that next year, I'll probably get one of the scan tools that are Palm based. Having a laptop really doesn't appeal to me.

Some of the products that I've been looking at are:

Well http://shadetreesoftware.com/ is the best for vag, just like the ross-tech tool.
I can make you a Gameboy based one if you like (no I am not kidding).

i used to have an old reader, after using VAG-com i wouldn't go back to it. people are right, buy a cheap $50 notebook with win98 on it and nothing else and just load the shareware version of vag-com from ross tech. so many more abilities.

              to continue....

ie. when my CEL came on the other day we had no idea what was up with it. it was a coolant code, but the VR6 has 3 coolant sensors. by going into vag-com and seeing what the computer thought my engine temp was we were able to tell it was that sensor. the other 2 do the fan and gauge but the ECU one was busted so it thought my car was at -40 and therefore dumping tons of fuel into the system to try and compensate. nothing like 12L/100km's when i should be getting 8. system helped me solve it and a quick $9 part switch had me done.
if you are gonna spend the $$ might as well get somthing that allows you to fully access your car

true, but sidejam owns a saturn...so this obd2 code reader is perfect for him.

It'll work in a pinch for VW's, but if somebody here *gasp* drives a non-vw and needs a scan....

It's funny because we've mentioned the Saturn here a couple times, I guess everyone still assumes everyone else on here still drive mk4's

I hope you're planning on coming on the cruise sidejam
