My diesel gets about 700-750 city km's and I've squeaked just over 1000km's out of it highway driving and thats on a tank that is roughly 63litres to fill from dry... It has plenty of power and keeps a smile on my face!
I would love to have your car.......
Twin turbo V6 with 400 lbs of torque....

You should probably actually look in these first. The numbers are high because they are full of diesels. The gas cars typically got high's of 27 and lows in the low 20's.......
I just looked in 2011, and 2012, but I am sure these follow through the rest of the years....

The GC only weighs 4800 lbs dry, so 5000 lbs with fuel, washer fluid, ect. The MPG's are correct though, my wife's has 10.6 on it right now, 70% highway, 30% city all stock engine, but pretty much fully loaded GC.
Mine is a overland full load.
My bad on the 6300pounds I was looking at gross weight. I pulled on to the scale today with a full tank of fuel and it was 2420kg so 5320ish pounds. Without me in it

I always thought I was strange. Now I have a Saab and it's official I'm strange......

I am on the phone, but that really looks like 2 turbo's.
I am curious what makes the overland heavier then the laredo? My wifes has all but 3 options from what I can tell. Rear heated seats, dual climate control and Nav. It has leather, sunroof, rear entertainment, QD II, ect. The mpg is still pretty good I figure for a 5000 lb brick with awd.

I've gotten 583km's city driving in my 1.8t and I stil think I could have reached almost 600 if I would have tried. Highway driving I've reached 800km's before I stopped for fuel. As to whoever said that TDI's could beat a 1.8t going up a hill, I would like to see this.
Dj i understand not everyone can grasp how a dyno works but lets just go over some numbers. When your tdi is at 125kph and 2200 rpm . you will be at say 250wtq right ..(assuming you have 3 k into your car) At that speed a manual 1.8t 5 spd will be at 2800rpm and a 6 spd 3100ish , that if you look at the 3000k modded 1.8t car puts it at around 240wtq. So honestly about even. Then you factor in that the 1.8t hp begins to climb shortly after torque drops off and blam the tdi gets left in the dust as its tiny little horses run out of breath . You are thinking the 1.8t was not a great engine for torque but actually it was designed for useable torque ... no vtec here . A chipped and exhaust alh /bew a fun little car with ample power but it will have its ass handed to it on any long hill pull buy a chipped and exhaust 1.8t ...... or turbo upgrade for turbo upgrade, and if you think you are making enuf to be pulling on big turbo 1.8t i ask when did you change the rods in your car, if you haven't you are not even close the power needed , in all the alh cars that go bigger than a cute vnt17 the rods make for a neat game of horse shoes
and $10,000.... into any car is easy . thats 3000 into having and engine built , thats trying out 2 types of turbos, two transsmissions , axles , clutches , intercooler, meth, pyrometer, tuneS, bigger brakes , suspension , and people can say they make all kinds of power on the interwebs , but yet no one has done that anywhere arround here . crazy ... its like "I have a girlfriend but she lives in new york she is hot trust me " .
lol you guys ........lets just find out what we can buy for $3000....... lets start with franken turbo . $1299........ and $240 injectors, Tune $650. and an exhaust ......should be arround 3 k .
you seem to forget that with such low rpms, The AREA OF USEFUL POWER UNDER THE LINE IN THE DYNO IS TINY = no
the 1.8t is a performance engine, the tdi is an economical engine, i have built a 200 whp, 450 wtq. alh, and it is at over 10k in the build, 10k into a 1.8t is a gdam monster and would curb stomp the biggest tdi car out there .I promise mod for mod stock to stock the only thing a tdi can do better is avoid this
So you're saying that your $3000 upgraded 1.8t could outpull my $3000 upgraded tdi through the mountains? Not a chance. Perhaps the $10000 1.8t will outpull it, but its got over 3x the money sunk into it. You sunk over $10000 into an ALH and only got 200hp and 450 wheel torque out of it? I'm not saying you don't know what you're doing, but I know of a ton of guys in the states that are putting out 300-350 hp and 500-550 wheel torque with $10000 into it. What type of mileage are you getting once you add the $3000 worth of mods to the 1.8t because my mileage goes up when I add my mods. I'm going to take a guess that your mileage will go down, rather significantly. And the low RPM's actually work great in the mountains Chris because if I'm cruising at 120-125 I'm at around 2100-2200 RPM and thats right at my Torque peak and I will have boost right away.
Anyways, this thread has been hijacked and I apologize to the OP about going off topic. My overall point was the fact that driving a modded TDI I not only get better mileage, but have an unreal amount of torque at my disposal any time I want it. Making it the best of both worlds.
but seriously this punked right your Ashton Kutcher ?
1.9TDi (North America, because the European models are much more powerful stock) VS 1.8T
They both have lots of low end torque
The TDI has more usable torque at lower RPM than the 1.8T, but not by much
The 1.8T has higher HP but at similar mods the HP evens out
They both can be easily modded to get great HP and Torque gains
The 1.8T comes in GLI which is awesome, but the TDI sport is pretty close
The TDI has better fuel economy up to 60MPG (50MPG usual), but according to here the 1.8T can get up to 45MPG (35MPg usual)
The 1.8T is quieter, the TDI engine is louder
So in the end, if you don't care so much about fuel economy and want a quiet car the 1.8T is for you, if care more about fuel economy and don't mind a slightly noisier car then the TDI is for you.
I personally don't mind the louder engine and like having up to 60MPG so I'm a TDI fan.
NO with similar mods the difference gets further the 1.8t power will grossly exceed the tdi (guys i am not randomly hating here .The tdi in question is my favorite engine ever made!!!!! but i have owned 2 of them and one bew. Technically i have owned every vw engine accept a 24v vr6 , and i feel i have a great deal of knowledge in this area , no chance in hell buck for buck a tdi can keep up with a 1.8t for performance, Can we make them fun hell yes . would i get rid of one to buy a 1.8t for the performance , i might but i wouldnt think anyone else would , )accept in the tdi with certain mods mpg will defiantly go up.Even the monster tdis we build are getting 900 k per tank still . and you mod the 1.8t the mpg goes completely away in town , on highway still good , The MUTANTT would do 500-600 k per tank . gt35 880cc injectors . please dont think i am hating on the ALH. stop defending its performance it wont win ,If you want i can get the guy that owns kerma to get you some info on his most powerful tdi ever made , and i promise he wont argue this point i am making . A equally modified 1.8 will beat it . but when you modify a tdi its not to be the fastest car . its to be doing something different , and still retain fuel economy , RESPECT OK!!!!! The next cruise to Abraham lake we do, i will have a frikin slew of 1.8t cars there you can try this theory out on one of the passing lanes , your eyes will be opened , untill then ALH IS AWESOME , 4CYL TURBO GAS VAG IS AWESOME AND POWERFULL , AND S4 SUCKS (lol thats just always need to be in there )

Owning both i will say this (mind my wifes is modded but i know what a stock 1.8t is like still)
My tdi is the sport model, the bew engine sure it has some low end torque but it doesn't give you the back of the seat feeling when you get into it like a 1.8t. I'm talking stock here. It's not a slouch like 2.slow was but it sure doesn't have the get up and go the 1.8t does.
Tdi being louder i agree partially the ALH being mechanical electronically controlled and it has one large injection per stroke yes it has the typical diesely knock.
Bew is much more quiet (almost sounds like a sewing machine) Since it has electronic unit injectors which correct me if i'm wrong the bew does 6 pilot injections per stroke. Which would causes better atomization of fuel, better burn, less smoke and of course a much more quiet engine as detonation of fuel isn't one big bang! I found the bew to be around the same noise level as 1.8t, at least at idle. Possibly more quiet while driving.
New common rail tdi engines i couldn't speak of. But i will say the common rail engines i work on at work are extremely quiet. Can barely hear them on the hwy while driving...again they do pilot injections as well.
I know the threads been kinda jacked already and i do find it interesting about the discussion of a 1.8t versus tdi up a steep grade. I like diesels simply because i work on them all day and the milage. I also do really like the low end torque. But i really do enjoy driving my wifes car, 1.8t is a very well engineered engine.
Ok question what if it was just this... 1.8t stg 1.5 and a bew tdi stg1.5 tune. I ask simply because i want tune my tdi to stg 1.5. Which i believe from malone is 130hp and 250ft/tq. What would a 1.8t be sitting at for hp and torque?? Out of curiousity
