  • Ignorance is bliss???

    NVD people:

I've been reading about the NL horror stories lately, and wondering if maybe because I'm so out to lunch, when it comes to costs or repairs, that I've been saved from all that stress...

I've been taking my Jetta to NL for 17 yrs. now, and other than some bills that have taken my breath away, I'm still going there!! There have been 2 things that happened to me, to make me doubt them "a little"....:

    1. When I still had my factory tape deck (that you could use without the key), Northland completely drained my battery, which had to be charged before I could leave. I never left my deck on, and (all this I noticed on the drive home) it was def. on, when I drove home, plus the treble and bass knobs had been adjusted, and I always listened with both set to the neutral position. Northland stated they NEVER let their mechanics listen to customer's decks, even though I thought I had some pretty good proof they had.. (I now leave my Pioneer detacheable face plate at home, when I take the Jetta there)

    2. Northland told me, when they had my car for some minor fix-ups I wanted done, that the antifreeze was the wrong type (based on the color), and would eat at the aluminum block, if it wasn't changed, and the rad flushed. Took the Jetta to Fountain Tire, across the street, who tested the ph level or something, and told me the antifreeze in the Jetta was ok, and that with the diff. colors now available, you shouldn't make a call like that, strictly on what the color of the antifreeze is..

I guess my biggest problem is--I like convenience, and since NL is between my house and work, I can drop off the car in the morning, take a bus to the C-train station, and get to work, and can pick up my car after work, without needing anyone to drive me anywhere..

Other than having to wait the odd time, (but very few and far between) say maybe an extra day, I have always gotten my car back on time, without any problems.

Maybe if I was as knowledgeable about the workings of a VW, as you people are, I would think differently about NL, but as I know I will always "throw money" at Northland (there's that "convenience" thing again), rather than try and fix problems myself, I've sealed my own fate!! Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, when it comes to being a NL customer...

    My 2 cents worth...

The radio thing has happened to me too. I hardly ever listen to the "Radio" and if I do it is Jack, I always listen to CDs that I have burnt. I drove the car to NL and I had a CD playing. I picked up the car and some bloody honkey tonk yahoo was whining on the stereo, I look down and it on 105 That is not a programmed station on my car so why was it on if they don't touch the stereo? I can see them ejecting the CD to listen to the car making noises but not change stations on the radio.

I have a feeling this may become a NL flame thread.

I personal have had great service with NL... although my car has never been in there (that could be the difference) When my car alarm was going crazy there tech's were more then willing to try to help me fix the problem after I told them i was a student... I phoned SCFC and other then Dave there Tech's just wanted me to bring the car in. Like you I am not mechanically inclined so find myself at the mercey of a mechanic more often then not, but thanks to NVD (Dave, Brent, Simon, Jason and all the members) I have saved over ~$500 (if not $1000) I think this year in minor repairs that would have other wise gone to the shop…

On another note I noticed the other day when I was taking my car in to get a new windshield that off of Edmonton trail and ~32 Ave there is a Euro mechanic that say he does only VW, Audi, BMW and Porsche car repairs… will have to check it out one day.

It all depends on what you go there for.

Service? OK, that is no problem.

Warrany repairs? Could be a problem.

Could be 2 Square. They left a flyer for their shop when I was at Smith Mcley with my Jetta. Oh yeah, and it had some chocolates with it (mmm, melty windshield chocolates).

They have a website too, but I don't know it off hand. CVD people have said they are kind of expensive but do decent work.

With a dealership as big as Northland and the number of people that get service, your bound to get a few bad experences. I think at somepoint every VW dealer has had a bad comment on this website. There are two sides to every story and we only hear the customers side on here. A friend of mine that works at Northland told me the other side of Durden's experence and I'm sure like every bad experence there are 30+ good ones that nobody cares to share.

                      Re: Ignorance is bliss???

Every time I have walked in there they have pissed me off.

The sales guy was a schmuck when I bought the car, but that's okay cuz I didn't talk to him for more than 10 minutes when I bought it.

The ditz service advisor told me they would completely void my warranty if I had a boost gauge installed.

I used to work with this other service advisor about 18 years ago when I worked at Can. Tire. ******* then, ******* now. "If you change your own spark plugs you will probably be denied any warranty claims you have for the future of your warranty". He then got PO'd at me when I pointed out that they charged me for an air filter during a service package but I have a CAI, "it's a small price to pay to not have your warranty voided".

Last week I took a friend there to check out a TDI and start the buying process. Once again, salesman = putz. So we took their TDI out, whipped the hell out of it and now were gonna go elsewhere to buy the car. The guy totally talked down to her. At one point I told the guy 'Hey, you should be kissing her ass, not mine. She's buying.' He laughed and though I was kidding.

The one high point about NL is that they seem to be the easiest to squeeze for a low price.
