  • 1.8T timing belt

I'm at 160,000km on my 2000 and looked in my Bentley manual about changing my timing belt, it says VW has no recommendation, they suggest just measuring it's width and look for general wear. Northland says it should be done at 125,000km for $593 total (4.5hrs labour and the belt $81.51). Has anyone done this yet or know whether Bentley or Northland is right? Northland says the 1.8T is an interference engine so this is a concern for me, any thoughts are appreciated.

If the belt goes bad things happen.

        I'll do mine at 100.

I have been told 168k as well, I think 100k is a good safe number, I think it is what most manufactures recommend.

90k-100k is a good km range to get it changed

i changed mine at 100k. it was expensive, but i felt it necessary on a higher mileage 1.8t

                  Re: 1.8T timing belt

The belt is easy fine for 160K. It's the cheap POS water pump which can screw up the hydrolic tensioner for your timing belt that is the problem. And since in order to get at said POS water pump, you pretty much have done all the labor for a timing belt job already, they replace it too.

That is what I have gleaned.

Yes, change it sooner than later. A friend of mine just had her timing belt go and it went down fighting. After all was said and done, the motor needed to be rebuilt. Total cost: $2500.

Thanks for all the replies, especially the extra info on the water pump Khyron. I'd heard about this also but wasn't sure with all the different stories. I like the better safe than sorry, might as well get the job done right. Gav

Hello there, any update on this one? Am also looking for some manuals that can help me to change my 2011 Volvo C30 Timing Belt Tensioner. I know this was quite old but still hoping someone can help me on this one.
