  • Dealership Disaster at Northland Volkswagen

A year into the ownership of my 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T the clutch went. It was a summer day going in traffic up a mountain pass. Funny thing is at the top where my clutch died was another 1.8T with a blown clutch.

VW replaced it under warranty, even though Northland Volkswagen in Calgary blammed my driving (ummm, ya, if my 88 Corolla can do it the VW better). So a year after that the clutch started slipping again. I take it in and VW will not warranty it. Now im over the barrel with my Jetta dismantled at Northland Volkswagen already $500 in the tubes. I cant tow it because the transmission is out and get this, they want $2500 for a new clutch.

I called around and found an actual made in Germany clutch for under $1000, but Northland Volkswagen refuses to allow me to use it. They want to extort me to put the VW part in, even though i am convinved the cheap VW parts are defective. The German performance after market clutch is much better, but they left a message stating they do not install after market parts. Ummm, I have friends with receipts that Northland Volkswagen HAS put in aftermarket parts (more evidence of extortion).

The service manager wants to charge me storage fees for my dismantled car sitting on his lot for the past month while i tried to get an answer from VW Canada if the part was warrantied. I sought legal advice and was told not to pay this, they have since taken it off my bill.

Now we are getting frustrated, phone calls not answered and today, they called and are refusing to do any work on my car. So, I have a half taken apart Jetta, that can not be towed sitting at the Worst dealership EVER (and I have been to some bad ones), and they will not even help me out.

Im wondering how i can pay $35,000 for a brand new car and get treated like this. I dont have any bad feelings towards Volkswagen manufactuer, but I would warn you to NEVER go to Northland Volkswagen.

I have the messages the dealership has left on my phone still, I will be starting a website detailing my story, and the legality behind what they are doing. They are not willing to put anything in writing, but pending legal action may be required to.

Other Volkswagen dealerships have offered to help and are trying, a few VW specialty shops offered to do the entire work for under $1000 and are trying to help.

PS- Did anyone notice Northland Volkswagen adds for TDIs stated "TDI stands for Turbo Diesel Injection" when its really is Turbo Direct Injection... I guess its indicitive of their passion for Volkswagen cars.

Ive been to the Wolfsburg factory twice and the Glass factory in Dresden once, i plan on going back during world cup, I just hope this experience doesn't take away some of the lustre for the cars I enjoy so much.....

Nasty! There is Vw Board you can report bad dealerships and check their ratings.

      See Below.

      http://1.8t.org/dealers/?fs=ab&sd=desc

      From the VWVORTEX

There is a site called 1.8T.org that lets people rate their experience with Audi and VW dealers. It's little consolation, but at least you can check what kind of ratings a dealer has before you take your car there for them to screw up. I have 4 VW dealers close to me; 3 are rated lousy. I've used the "good" one--I can't imagine how bad the others must be.

I suggest going to that website and post your experience! In fact, everybody who uses a dealer should.

you best bet would be to buy a vr6 clutch kit from www.ecstuning.com or PM boy racer here (www.eutuning.ca) and you can get one cheaper

I have decided to use SCFC for all my service work and warranty concerns.
I had my car in with them last week and was so much happier with the service than that of Northland. Thumbs up to SCFC...

Re: Dealership Disaster at Northland Volkswagen

I would love to put an aftermarket clutch in, however the Northland Volkswagen service manager stated in a recorded message which i will be putting online that "We [Northland Volkswagen] do NOT install aftermarket parts"

              Therefore he is either:

              a) not being truthfull and trying to extort us for the cost of a VW clutch
              or
              b) missing out on a VERY lucrative market segment

I have friends that have had aftermarket parts put on at Northland Volkswagen so you do the math.

a VR6 clutch isn't an aftermarket clutch its OEM components just higher spec seriously you can get the kit for like 5-600 bucks US and save yourself a ton of money.. but thats up to you

Thanks guys! I aim to please. I hate hearing horror stories like this. Makes me work harder to help people out. Just think..If you brought it to SCFC you may have been writing a thank you letter instead of a hate letter.

Thanks all the advice, I will let you know what comes of this. Hopefully one day it'l be back out on the road.

I rented a Golf MKV TDI in Germany this summer and drove it through the alps over 2600 Km. Loved every minute of it so maybe I will be down at one of the OTHER dealerships next year!

Funny..I went to see the alps but I think I ended up taking more pics of the Golf :P

                          FREE FROM THE DEVILS GRIPS

Although the car can not be moved, there is a Goodyear Goodwrench shop directly accross from Northland Volkswagen. My brother called them and they were really helpfull and agreed to help us get the car back (you notice here its only Northland Volkswagen who doesn't want to help people)!

So they lent us an engine hoist, he strapped the engine in (the transmission is in the trunk) and rolled it over to Goodyear. Picked up a aftermarket quality part (Northland Volkswagen tried to say the cheap OEM part with a known flywheel defect (too small) is of higher quality) for super cheap and now have a place that will put it on.

Im still going to pursue the complaint website which should document in detail the entire story as well as talk to AMVIC. Moral of this story is NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR TO NORTHLAND VOLKSWAGEN - or you may have to roll it away on a hoist....

A suggestion I have is everyone to pay for CAA so if you get into a bad situation you can tow your car elsewhere for free. CAA gives you a certain number of free tows each year, supposedly no questions asked where you are towing from/to. I think its only about $80 and you can probably save that with 1 tow/year or almost save that much by filling up only at Husky/Mohawks.

Plus you can get movie tix from them (at Crowfoot anyways) good at any Cineplex theatre in Calgary (Crowfoot and Sunridge for sure) for $8. My gf buys piles of these tix a year.
