Things I learned

Well I removed my tint over the past 2 days and there a few things I learned very quickly doing that job!

1)It sucks
2)100% Ammonia, small space…. Sucks! That stuff is strong… very strong
3)Tint glue is sicker then a Mexican building a VW on hot sunny day!
4)No tint on a MK3 looks MUCH better then half tint!

I agree w/ #4. MK3's should be tint free.

Wow. Those instructions are quite involved! I've removed tint from a dozen vehicles in my time and it can be done much easier:

1) heat up the "outside" of the window with a hair dryer (a nice 12" square area), so it's hot to the touch. Then just peel the tint off, a section at a time, heating it up with the hair dryer as you go. (you may need a razor blade to 'lift' a corner)
2) ammonia sucks. use ACETONE to get rid of the glue!

very easy, and no mess!

Bumping up this old thread...I got pulled over today here in Rocky because of my tint. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later.

The cop was cool about it I played dumb and told him the dealership sold the car to me this way and that I had no idea it was illegal. He let me off with just a warning but told me to get it removed and gave me a week to do it. Living here in a small town driving a sprint blue car I know he'll see me again so I'm going to go ahead and do it. I was actually thinking of going lighter in the future anyway as it is way too dark for my liking...

Anyway, does anyone have any other cool tips to make the job easier?

Take the windows out if you so feel ok doing that. Last time I soaked it with windex and put black garbage bags over them and left in the sun. Make sure they stay moist. About an hour later I started peeling, pull from the corner straight down along the glass so the tint you're pulling off almost touches the tint still attached if that makes sense?

Methods described above are dirty, smelly, and labor intensive.

Use a clothes steamer or a steam gun if you have access to it. Warm the window from the outside in small areas and begin peeling, keeping the steam directed at the area you are working on. Leaves zero glue if you take your time. If your rush you may have some adhesive left on the window, warm that up with steam and use a razor blade to get it all off. For the rear window just take your time, apply TONS of steam, and peel slowly, that way you will have zero adhesive to clean up once done. All of my defroster lines came out undamaged.

Total time = a couple hours.

^Awesome thanks for the tips...I do have access to a clothes steamer since we use it in the pro shop so I'll give that route a go on Saturday and see how it works.

What Nismo said. I used that method years ago, I didn't have access to a clothes steamer so I used an iron that can steam.

I did it on my Civic a few years back very easily using a $5 spray can of "Bon Ami" which you can find in any Canadian Tire. Spray on, wait 5 min, peel off.

Steamer method worked awesome!

The first window went really well, I took my time and it came off no problem with no residue at all!

I got a little over confident after the success of the first window and went too fast on the second and have a ton of residue to clean up

This may be a stupid question, but where do I find a razor blade to scrape the glue off? I'm guessing Canadian tire, but what am I looking for exactly lol?

Most important thing I learned is take your time and go slow and you'll have no adhesive to screw around with at all.
