  • diesel jetta PLEASE HELP ME!

i want a diesel jetta, but i want it to be able to go fast. what i really wanted was a 99.5 + but my max is basikly $10 000 (for the car) i know that the new engine(tdi) that came out in 97 has 15 more bhp but the 97 -99 are basikly as expensive as the 99.5 + would it be a bad decision to go with the 1.9L TD engine?or can i kick it up a notch to be like the tdi?
taking into consideration noise and smoke speed and power.

thanks alot for any feed back

    cheers

I am not one of the local dieselheads but as far as I know the TDI (later engine) has much much more potential than the earlier engine. If you want something fast you should probably limit yourself to the TDI if you can find one.

Wait, what am I saying. If you want something fast you should buy a nice gas engine.

I found a nice yellow 5-speed TDI beetle on canadatrader.com with < 100,000km for 10,900 so if you keep looking I am sure you can find something... maybe limiting yourself to jetta is not the best idea, I am sure if you look for a jetta or golf or beetle or passat you'd find one sooner. All are nice cars.

yea you can't chip early diesels, everything is mechanical. where as its all electronic on the 99.5+ i'd say go for the mk4 diesel and chip it.... but if your going for style mk3's look real good! and its a given all diesels should smoke!!

May be hard to find any for around 10k though..... with gas prices as high as they are our TDI's are gonna be in high demand

First things first, you aren't going to find a decent diesel for $10k or under.
Secondly, the diesel engine is NOT a speedster... The torque is much higher than the HP. Don't get me wrong the car still moves pretty damn well, but if I were to line up stock with a gas dub I would get smoked...
I didn't buy a diesel for it to be a racer, I will do visual modifications and maybe eventually a chip but its definately not a "FAST" car...

i know that a stock diesel would get raped against a stock gass but i am not planning on leaving it stock for long.

                    MK1 - 197x-1984
                    MK2 - 1985-1992
                    MK3 - 1993-1999
                    MK4 - 1999-2005
                    MK5 - 2006-200x

Edit: There isn't much in the way of aftermaket parts for the old TD engine. If you plan on modifying your diesel you are best off with a MK4 body style.

A stock gas VR6 or 1.8T will beat/match even a heavilly HEAVILLY modded TDI in a straight line. So do it for the environment or fuel economy but not for the acceleration.

you'll only find either a very well broken in or a broken tdi for 10 grand. You should probably plan on around 15,000 if you want something in decent shape. (with gas prices going up so fast my tdi is increasing in value on a daily basis).

I have to agree with Bart Kris. No one, even Barts, is really heavily modified around here. Some of the guys in the states are pushing 200whp, sure they won't kill anyone in the 1/4mile but try keeping up to one on an autocross course.
