  • Shaving doorhandles...

Well, I popped some wood over this guy's car:

I'm not a fan of the wheels, but I love the shaved doorhandles. I've always like shaved doorhandles...I've seen gazillions on old hot rods, but never in person on a mk4.

So what's involved? Does the entire lock mechanism have to be removed? And then replaced with a solenoid? I'm guessing something has to pop the door 'out' as well...

I have a few friends so I know a little bit, but not first hand knowledge. 2 guys i know in town have them and 1 is done welfare, and the other done properly. you have to keep the locking mechanism intact because after all you still want to be able to lock your doors, but you also have to put in a solenoid to "pop" it open slightly. the one guy who has his done gheto style doesnt haev his inner door handles hooked up so he has to open it from the outside from the inside. it can work awesome if installed well, all depends on the installer. and make sure you have a hidden release to pop the door when your battery dies.

I did it on one of my last projects, I'm not too sure about doing it on a Mk4 because of all the electronics involved with the interior lights keyless entry and all. On mine I unhooked the door locks completely, there is no need for these and you would be screwed if you had no other way to unlock them. I had a backup switch inside the gas door, the switch was disconnected when the alarm was armed. I relocated the battery to the bed in case it went dead and the 2 remote outputs on the alarm controlled the doors.

I had it for 4 years, put a lot into it, had a good time doing it, I sold it to a friend, I drove it again last month, Going from GM to VW is a huge difference, it looks nice but drives like a sloppy mess, there is no feel for the road, but I guess it's a truck and all.

I just thought I would throw in that shved handles are illegal in alberta. Something about not having a door handle if you are in an accident, even though they usually break the glass anyways

I got pulled over for tint a few times, they never said anything about it. One time an RCMP gave me 5 tickets for varoius things that were "non-conforming", nothing to do with shaved handles. And lots of cars have automatic locking doors.
