clutch/tranny question

hey guys this is a really cool site i just finally found out about this site....i just recently got a jetta (5 speed). i learned how to drive standard after i baught this car...im really getting paranoid because i can drive stick sorta now but like 2 days ago i dont know what happned to me but the clutch was half way down and i shifted into third and it made a very unpleasant sound like a nasty crunching/grinding noise, and when i first got the car i like stalled it so many times, and it made like a grinding noise like a couple of times too....im getting paranoid do you guys think my clutch/transmission are ruined now and will need to be replaced like soon?

lol no no.. just drive it nice and you'll be fine.. if you hear stuff grind push the clutch back in.. take your time.. practice in a big empty mall lot.. and stuff.. practice using the ebrake for hill starts so you don't roast your clutch and you'll be fine..

alright thanks for the quick reply man i was really worried...but thanks for clearing everything up for me thanks bud....i pretty much got the whole 5 speed thing down its just uphill thats kinda hard....i heard about the ebrake thign, how does that work if u dont mind explaning? thanks

well when you on a hill in traffic put you foot on the normal brake and then pull up the ebrake too.. when the traffic/light goes.. take your foot off the normal brake and then use the clutch/gas to start to make the car move with the ebrake holding you back and when you feel the car wanting to move pop the ebrake off and you'll go.. tons less stress on a clutch for a new manual driver.. i did it that way when i first learned..

Yeah I have made grinding noises probably a dozen times and no bad effects yet.

You might want to change out the gear oil after you are comfortable with the 5-sp. It is because every time you make a grind, there are metal flakes come out and you don’t want to have that circulate on and on in the internal.

gear oil? sorry if i sound stupid but whats gear oil? if i wait about a month to get it changed is that okay? or is that too long to wait?

yea wait until you learn to drive.. the tranny oil is the oil for the tranmission that makes it work smoothly same as engine oil..

edit.. yes not the 'same' oil as engine oil but it does the same purpose

It is a heavy oil like engine oil it is not the same as engine oil, it is called gear oil. Ryan knows what he is talking about but some times he has trouble commuincating his ideas a cross. We are used to this and we help him when we can.

only gear that grinds on my car is 2nd when shifting quickly. i hate it. probably get the fluids changed while its hibernating this winter though.
