  • 2002 Gti 1.8t

Just came from beyond.ca...posting on how to mod my '02 GTI 1.8T.

I was wanting to put a Mit. 20G or Big 16G turbo on it (wanna push 300+ ponies with as little $$$ as possible). No way I am going to spend 10G's on upgrading everything just to say I have an APR Stage III.

As far as chipping it, how should I go about it?

    Advice!

welcome dude.. those turbos aren't familiar to me.. most common on a VW would be a garrett GT28R, GT28Rs, T3/t4, t3 super60 kinda deal..

Welcome to the forum! I love talking about 1.8T BT upgrades. Not many people have used mitsubishi turbos on the 1.8T that I know of. The majority of cars usually use a Garrett type turbo or similar. Why are you interested in a mitsubishi turbo - do you think they will be much less expensive? $800-$1100 will buy a brand new Garrett turbo to do the trick. Most 20v cast or premade manifolds are T28 or T3 flanged so in order to use a mitsu turbo you would need to have your own manifold made custom.

I personally would put the TD04H-19T on the 1.8T. I think the 19T is one of the best of the mitsu turbos and should be awesome on the street at this engine size because it spools brilliantly fast. Greddy uses this turbo in some of their best kits. It is factory on a V70R AWD. The 16G might work out, the 20G might be a bit too big...

300-325whp is about as high as you can push the stock internals safely, especially the rods. If you don't plan on building the engine, you should probably buy the turbo that will spool the fastest yet make around 300whp.

As for chipping, Boy Racer is the Calgary upsolute rep and can offer some options, but if you're going to replace the turbo you should wait and buy a chip afterwards and have it tuned for your new turbo setup.

Also I read your thread on beyond.

As far as I know nobody makes an adaptor of any kind that lets you bolt a mitsubishi turbo onto the 1.8T manifold. Could you make one custom? Yes. Is it gonna be worth it? No, not in my opinion. The stock manifold is pretty tiny and probably won't flow as well as you want. For a small turbo upgrade to about 250whp it will work okay. If you want to make more power and/or are planning to use something big like a 16G you won't get away with the stock manifold! Also, even if you bolted up a mitsu turbo, I do not think that the stock intercooler piping, inlet piping and exhaust piping will connect. You will need to custom make/weld new inlet, exhaust, and intercooler connections.

ATP has JUST come out with custom cast turbine housings on a few of their Garrett style turbos that bolt up to the stock manifold. They are being met with mixed reviews, since for the money it might be better to just buy a manifold.

Welcome to the boards, and like Ryan said, probably easier to stick to the 'known' VW turbo brand. But props for thinking outside the box!

So far all of the ATP KO4 Eliminator reviews have been positive and work out to be about a grand cheaper then buying a new manifold. These bolt right up, and now they are coming with decent software packages..

How can it be $1000 less than a manifold? That is an exaggeration.

I am not saying I do not think it is a great product, I just think that its not THAT much cheaper. You end up having to buy your turbo from ATP and so you're paying their turbo price too which is more than elsewhere.

                  Re: 2002 Gti 1.8t

The $1000 difference is comparing all of the ATP parts.. either using the KO4 Eliminator or the regular GT28rs and the manifold.. both using the fueling kit..

                  KO4 Eliminator GT28rs $1595usd

Full GT28rs kit (Manifold, turbo etc) $2399usd

2399-1595=804 usd With a rough conversion to Cdn =$980 cdn.. therefore supporting my $1000 estimate

I realize more parts are needed for both to run, this is just the Elim vs. Turbo/Manifold kit. (Fueling, DP, some use 3" intake pipe etc)

Yes you are getting close however just the eliminator turbo (afaik) does not come with the oil lines and fittings and gaskets and such that come in the kit (that you will still need). From ATP the fittings and lines are VERY expensive you gotta knock several hundred more off! Plus I thought you meant US.
