It's not so much a disagreeing opinion as it is an accusation.

This all came up because of the failure of the first show which was a HUGE ambitious project and had a very odd name. And now the knee-jerk reaction is to trash everything and start over?

Wrong, it came about because we want to make club shirts, get your facts straight. Also, in case you hadn't noticed, you're disrespecting the very club you are trying so hard to protect. And why are you blaming Blair for everything?! He didn't even bring it up.

Sorry, all this has gone way off topic, but it frustrates me. C.J. you made some good points, as did you R-Audi.

      Re: Club Name Change

OK, I've been bored at work watching this thread on and off all day. But now I gotta put my 2 cents in. The biggest argument i'm seeing against changing the name is fear - Fear that the club will attract the wrong crowd; fear that the club will grow too large; fear that potential members will be dazed and confused amongst the broad spectrum of makes in the club; fear that maybe "Which Dinan CAI?" will be the topic flooding the boards, blah, blah, blah....C'mon, for the love of God! It's a freakin' club name for God's sake! Do you honestly believe that the Euro scene in Calgary is large enough to spawn the next "eurobeyond.ca"? And if it did, do you think that the inherent mentality and demographic composition of Euro owners would allow it to be like the current beyond forums? Why is there this frigid mentality that one type of club has to be mutually exclusive to another one? Why are people thinking a change in club name will result in the exile of mk4 owners? You don't think that a broader Euro club is possible? Newsflash: You're in one!

NVD has always been diverse in its members, makes, and generations of cars. Unfortunately, it's suffered from a bit of a misnomer, leading some people to feel that mk4 focus is the clubs only purpose... This is sad. I personally know several mk2, mk3, Audi, and even passat owners who have intentionally steered cleared of NVD thinking it was mk4 Golf/Jetta club. You may be right in that there might be a place for this type of exclusive club, but this is not it. Our club's strong point has always been it's people. People who are friendly, inviting, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about not only VW's, but the WHOLE Euro tuning scene.

It was implied that the newbie mk4 owner would be intimidated to roll up to a meet with Bimmers and Benzes. You don't think that same newbie could be intimidated by ultra-modified cars like Ryans and Simons? Or for that matter, what about the previously mentioned old school dubs and other makes who don't show up for similar reasons? Ironically, the same clique-ish mentality and snobbery that you are accusing members of, is the exact motivation that leads you to keep the club name and focus the same.

I can only speak for myself. But whether I'm driving my Jetta or an M3, I would LOVE to roll up to a meet or cruise with BMW's, Benzes, and our already amazing roster of Audi's and VW's. Why? Cuz it's really the people i'm going to see and hang out with; Diversity is better; and in case you haven't noticed, the more the merrier!

          Very well said Derek!

I agree that people seem to be afraid of change. Personally I believe that it is silly to think that simply changing the name of the club will invite some kind of doomsday. It will be the same people at the core of the club, and people are what form the heart of a community. Yes it may mean that a few more members join. Why is this bad? Why is it bad if they don't drive a Mk4 VW? Do you judge people so quickly based on the car they drive?

A few people seem to be holding tight to the idea that this club is some kind of replacement or alternate to CVD. Maybe at one time it was. I don't think this is a realistic view and to be honest holding such a view is hurting both clubs and the people in them. The best thing for everyone would be if both clubs could find a common ground and get along and work together. We are trying to take steps towards that kind of relationship even if its in the very distant future. But this discussion is not about CVD its about this club and where we want to go in the future.

Instead of criticising, perhaps we can have some suggestions. Try to be more forward looking, where do you see the club in 5 years? Have you thought that far ahead? The idea of a name and focus change has been talked about month-in and month-out by many of the people who put in the hard work to keep this site going. Part of the motivation for this discussion is that we do have concerns about this club now and in the future. Not everyone sees what it takes to run a club like this - it doesn't run itself. We constantly need sponsorship and new members to replace people who lose interest or move away. We constantly need to work towards improving our public image (yes we have a public image). We constantly try to arrange events and opportunities to keep the club fun and worthwhile. Not all of these things have been going well. We have had many setbacks, not all of which are necessarilly made into big discussions.

The idea of a fresh image along with a broader appeal could potentially be good for everyone. Its a step towards making this club stronger and more self sustaining. Most of all it looks towards a future that is more than a few months away, something that I think is being ignored by those who want to keep things the way they are.

              Re: Club Name Change

Wow this is freaking unreal, all I wanted to do was get some t-shirts under way for the members

I have never once used this club as a personal agenda, my car choice is based upon what I like not anything else. This club was started for the love of MK4 VWs and I thought it had grown and nurtured to be something more as we have had shows with Audi's, and MK3s. I have always been about what THE CLUB WANTS, NEVER WHAT I WANT that is why I have just tried to keep things moving as best I can despite not having a VW and if what I drive clouds my judgement tell me and I will step down.

I was not the one who brought up the name change and I have never been that in favor of it but was just hoping to help make things bigger so that like minded people who drive a Bimmer, Volvo or whatever could feel just as welcome. The club could change but if we keep the same attitude and friendly spirit I only see positive things coming about.

Therefore there will be another more specific poll about what KIND of name change people want, because I repeat this is about the club.
