I am in favor of a name/image change, but I don't really like any of the options we have so far.

      2010 Audi A4 S-Line
      2007 VW GTI 2.0T

      Past
      2003 VW Jetta GLI

I'm all for a club overhaul. I'll try to brainstorm some name ideas, too.

Something simple like Calgary Euro Cars would be the best in my opinion. but as I said, I'll come up with some more ideas.

          PASTED:

          As for the name, well...

          - we're going to be losing some credibility with the loss of bahnfest; we have less to lose by changing the name now than ever before

          - we recently saw that there is still some bad blood between nvd/cvd which I think might be helped by us moving to a more modern-european based car club

          - dwindling membership and attendance this year vs last summer

          - we have also recently seen an influx of audis and non-VWs

          - some important club members (C-Town, Canadian Turbo, Etc) are leaving the VW scene but want to stay involved in the club... this will continue to happen. Billip, James, even Ryan are thinking of getting non-VW's. Soon there won't be many VW's left.

          - increased sponsorship opportunities with more car types in the club

The name doesn't have to be dynamite. The name newveedub is nothing special, its actually kind of poor because it doesn't fit the cars in the club and overlaps clubveedub. Its just confusing, I have already had lots of people ask me if I must drive the new Jetta. Very annoying!

I think the best thing would be to do something very straightforward that make it obvious who are are. It should be age independant and doesn't need to be too clever for people to figure out. Especially if we want to be open to all ages and different types of people. Bahn-this or kraut-that is just going to confuse people and not be recognizable to people who are not already in-the-know.

I know that using the word 'euro' or 'european' is kind of cliche but the truth is that if an older MB or BMW driver sees it they are going to know what it is and might be interested. Likewise a younger new driver will recognize it. If you look at other clubs with all-age appeal like the CSCC its very obvious from the name "Calgary Sports Car Club" who they are and what they do, and they have members from all age brackets, with expensive cars and cheap cars mixed together and everyone gets along.

I'd propose something like eurodriver, eurorides or euromotors. I know its cheesy however it gets the job done about as well as newveedub or vwvortex and its easy to build into a reputation. We don't have to all love it, but we just make the change and live with it for the right reasons. I don't think anyone is going to quit because of such a name change.

            Re: Club Name Change

One other thing, if you are not in favour of the name change just because you drive a VW right now, please think of the future as well as about the other club members who no longer own VW's or who are thinking of getting a different european car. It would really be a shame to lose them and really doesn't make sense to include them but exclude potential new members.

Obviously I am a big proponent of the name change.

              Re: Club Name Change

I voted yes, after reading Kris' Essay, I can see some good reasons to change it.

And I think it would be cool to stay in the club for a long time but I don't know if i'll buy a new VW, there are lots of Euro cars that i'd be tempted to buy that are now in the price range of a new VW. Also, my wife may talk me into buying a Volvo, there's also the 1 series, etc.

I should say though that I was for a name change the last round too, don't want to make Kris look like the "bad guy" so to speak.

                  Well summarized Kris

You all know my opinion on this topic

As far as the name itself goes, I think anything is better, as long as it's not so specific and does not exclude potential members

I too think that something simple would be best, and like Kor said, the whole 'Euro' theme should be must. Although it is a bit vague, it gets the job done. Maybe incorperate some German words into the name, but ones that are easily translated. Like using the german spelling for club (klub) with the accents over the 'u' or something (Euroklub).

Oh, and I have a couple funny ones too.....how about Eurofahrt, which is the direct translation for Euroride. Or how about Kuhstadteuro, which means Cowtown Euro.

                        Re: Club Name Change

Kris, your post is an excellent summary as to why a name change would be beneficial right now. Like it or not, many of us will not own VW's as our next cars... and much like Blair, etc.... you may want to stay as part of the club. I personally know of people who have euro cars, who have mentioned they wish a club like NVD existed for them.

The reason Bahnfest fell flat was because of a lack of support/help, and by keeping our club stricly dub; that will continue to be an obstacle.

A broader scope means more events, bigger events, a bigger budget, and more people to hang out with. I see no real drawbacks to this at all right now. I definitely would keep it strictly euro however, otherwise we beceom nothing more than "another car club".
