    Re: Club Name Change

I like eurowerks and eurodriver. I wouldn't be too concerned about spelling out exactly what the club does/is with the name. It's always possible to put a tagline at the bottom of the logo in certain treatments which explains more. ie: "european rides and the people who love them". Something short and sweet.

Also, a name like eurowerks/eurodriver/eurowhatever would be much easier to make a nice looking logo for. With longer names I get visions of horrible "great seal" type logos that look old. nice logo = nice stickers, nice websites, etc. I also like how "euro[whatever]" is very pronoucable and readable... you don't have to spend 10 years saying the name. Long names get shortened to CSCC and stuff like that, and then people REALLY don't know what it means.

    Just my thoughts so far.

NVD has focus - watercooled VWs. If you start taking every person that has a BMW or an Audi (who have their own clubs btw), how is it different than becoming a big euro beyond.ca? And does that make it better?

Sure it sucks that people move to different brands, but that's what happens when you have clubs of newer cars. What happens when Blair buys a Ford? Or if I buy an RX8? Maybe Ryan will buy a big mudder Suburban. Where does it end? Keep blurring the lines?

And once again those that are sticking with the modern MK4s/MK5s will have to find a new home to have really good conversations about their cars.

Personally I think the older members have gotten bored with the same "which chip/which intake" etc and want change.

I disagree what anyone is tailoring the club to their momentary whims. The fact of the matter is that if we want to be able to put on cool shows and have any credibility within Calgary and beyond (no pun intended), we need growth. Growth isn't going to come from sticking with Mk4/Mk5 VW's. We are already a more diverse club than that (Audi/Smart), all we want to do is recognize that with an appropriate name.

The idea of moving to a more Euro-centric theme has been in play for the last few years.

Anyhow - Eurowerks does sound like a shop name, but Id prefer something catchy to..like... "Alberta Collition for the Modification of European Vechicles" or whatever the crap else you guys are talkin about :P

A main argument in your post above is not to change the club, however the club is already changing and this is more like updating the name to match our focus.

If you haven't noticed the changes thats okay, but they are definitely happening. We most definitely do not have a clear focus on watercooled VW's. We have audis joining the club (not just people switching to audis). We have a club president who does most of the work involved with nvd and he drives a Smart Car. We have older VW's such as Rabbits joining the club or wanting to join but feeling like they are out of place. And we trying to put on shows for other european cars such as MB's and BMWs.

Yes, this club does provide a local place for people with VW's to talk about their cars. However, its not CVD or a CVD alternative and I don't think in the long run we want it to be. Club vee dub is a local club for people with vw's to talk about vw's. We can and do still do that here however our focus is more on a community of european car enthusiasts and tuners. At our meets we often talk about other european cars and dream about owning more exotic european cars.

I understand where you are coming from when you say how far do we blur the line - do we start accepting domestics, asian imports or SUV's. This is a good point, but that is why we want to stick to a name that clearly defines our (expanded) boundaries. We also already know that within our current community, the majority of us ARE european car fans who would not really have any desire to bring domestic cars or trucks into the club culture at this time.

Lastly I think a few people might be hurt/insulted by your implication that this discussion is driven by older members being bored.

              Re: Club Name Change

I think the evolution of the club to a euro theme is a great for us all. Just because we change the name does not mean that 45 BMW owners will flood the boards all of a sudden, it just means they are welcome if they want to be. The goal is not to be a huge dominating club but to have a place for us and like minded people who drive European cars to have a place to call home online and on the boards, especially people who may not be as loyal to an idividual brand such as VW.

Eurowerks is a not bad name I do find it a bit trendy and shop like and am not full convinced it is the best. I agree the Calgary European Society of Car Type Owner Guys names are not so good, but will a name like Eurowerks be seen as too young and goofy. Maybe I need a Eurowerks logo to convince me otherwise......

                Re: Club Name Change

I'm agreeing with alot of people today. Building on Bill's post, I think a club is very shortsighted if they are focusing on just one very small niche. Sure some clubs are succesfull at it, but it also limits the clubs ability to do shows/events.

Like it or not, with the dwindling response to the MKV Jetta, the VW crowd may be moving to BMW's, AUDI's, Smarts, etc. I'm sure our club will always have it's "core" of stricltly VW's.... I just think opening the doors to other nice European cars helps the longevity of it.

What about adding a "sport" theme to the name. Such as "EuroMotorSport". That name is horrible.... but you get my drift

We would never exclude someone beacuse of what they drive if they wanted to be involved in the club and a new name just helps to make the point known to outsiders a little better.
