  • Domesting rust proofing?

A buddy of mine is getting a GM truck, and was told the following for "rust protection" options:

I talked to the GM dealer about rust protector for my truck plus
    protecting my interior.

They told me that for rust protection that they mount an electronic
device in your vehicle which emits ion pulse which stops rust from ever starting on your vehicle. They said that you will never have any rust - Cost $399.00
After I laughed at him, he called up Diamond-Kote to get some specifics (although on their website, there is no info...)

    I called Diamond-Kote directly.

They told me that they install an electronic rust module with anodes in the vehicle. These anodes in conjunction with the modules eliminate rust from occurring. They even mentioned that their product stops rust from starting on even the brake disc...

They are sending me literature in the mail detailing the theory behind the operation of their product. With the module installed you do not need to use chemical rust protector. They also guarantee that rust doesn't occur. If it does, they will fix it ....
Have any of you heard of this?

Yup, my dad has it on his 2005 F-350 but he sure didn't pay $399 I think it was like $159. Apparently they do actually work, whether its hype or not I could care less I got my VW.

The same type of technology is used on oil and gas lines. They run a small current through the metal that prohibits the metal from oxidizing therefor starting rust. In my opinion in todays car running and extra signal like this across a body that is already used as a ground is asking for trouble. All you need is for that thing to short out etc and if could make many electronic things go poof. Now I am sure they are designed to protect from all these hazards but as a electronics guy I would find an installed who knows these things inside and out.

Another technology you can use for rust proofing is called carwash.

Its along the same lines as older metal boats placing pieces of magnesium on the hull, which are 'sacrifical anodes' which means that they will lose electrons more easily, and thus oxidize (rust) before the other metal. This just places electrons to be lost. It seems like it should work in theory.
