  • MK IV Modification Questions

Hey guys, I have a few questions about some modifications on my car that I am looking to do. My apologies if I come across looking like a n00b...

    Car: 2005 Jetta TDI PD

1). I can get a deal on a K&N filter for my car... I have heard that there is Mass Airflow Sensor issues with the oil from the filter... I also have heard that there is no point changing out the factory filter as it seems to pass quite a bit of air... Is anyone using a K&N on their diesel and would be able to recommend or tell me to stay away from it? I understand that if the oil nukes my MAS then it wont be covered under warranty and I will be covering the cost.

2). I am looking at getting the car lowered by Concept1 with a FK kit (springs, shocks and struts). From what I have read there are a lot of people on the forums using this brand and had their labor done by Concept1. What is everyone's opinions of the kit and the install? Should I get the 35mm or the 55mm drop?

3). I am running 17" Long Beach rims from a 1.8T. I am looking to either powdercoat these rims black or get a set of new rims. Does anyone think that the longbeach's would look alright powdercoated (I have never seen it done), or should I just get a new set of rims?

One of my biggest concerns regarding modding is my warranty. I have decided to stay away from modding anything in regards to my engine (although I guess the K&N would be a "engine" mod)... How has everyone been with VW warranty and their modifications. Is there anything they have been stung on or anything they would advise me to watch out for?

As I mentioned before I can tell you anything about fixing laptops and computers... When it comes to cars I am a mere novice. Hoping you guys can help me out.

Re: Diesel MK V Modification Questions

no idea if a filter helps a tdi or not..

as for lowering.. i dunno if mk5 suspension is out yet?? if so i'd go with something by H&R if i was you..

and wheels i've seen black LBs.. and they were okay but you can get some cool 18s for a decent price from CMS and get some cool colors to boot.. plus 18s will look better.. think of 18s on a mk5 like 17s on a mk4 since the mk5 can now fit 20s haha and us mk4s can do 19s

      Re: MK V Modification Questions

Sounds like it's an MK4 Jetta, not an MK5. (2006 is the new model, not 05 and longbeaches won't fit a stock 06 as the 06 is not 5X100.)

This makes answering the quetions way easier for you guys as most things have been done and redone....

Re: Diesel MK V Modification Questions

The car is a 2005 though so it would still be a MK4 correct?? Bigger wheels are always better and I dont think the K&N will do that much for you.

Some people have not been as happy with C1s service so you may want to look at other options, such as H&R or Autotech kit to see what will work best for you.

          Re: MK V Modification Questions

yea concept 1 sells an fk kit for the mk V. but isn't the bolt pattern different isn't it 5x100 on mk4's and 5x112 on the mk5's? you won't be able to use the longbeachs, better go out and buy some benz rims instead

I have the 35/40 kit which would put your TDI to level. Alex and Bart have the 55/40 which will put the front a good bit lower than the rear on the heavier TDI engine. As far as install, I would give you a hand putting it on if you like, but would not trust my car to those goofs at C1. I've heard nothing but horror stories on anything they have installed on our cars.

I stopped reading when you said you were getting concept 1 to do...

c1 is crap in my opnion - its an opnion that is shared by **many ** of the people on this forum.

you'll be able to get some suspension thru AMI Motorsports, EUTuning etc for (chances are) alot less money than c1

                  Re: MK V Modification Questions

It sounds like you drive a MkIV not a MkV?

I would not get the installation done at C1, since I had to go back twice (that makes a total of 3 times) for my FK suspension install. A 4th time I went elsewhere and they found problems with how it was installed (a stripped bolt etc) and fixed me up.

If you want to buy a used MkIV Jetta FK suspension (bought it in 2004) I'll sell you mine at a good price! Its in good condition nothing wrong with it. You'd also get to see how low my car is and know how low yours would be. I am also on longbeaches so it would look very similar. Then you could spend the rest on a rear sway bar or something else to make the handling even better... think it over.

Ride height might be a little different given the heavier TDI engine.

Oh yeah that might not work so well with a TDI.

Well, if anyone else wants a cheap 1.8T suspension.

I have had to go back for every single thing I had installed at C1. I wish I would've wised up earlier (I did a good percentage of my mods before I was even aware of newveedub.com, so I didn't know any better ) Personally I would rather pay to have the dealer install my shiz then C1.

                            Thanks guys,
Sorry about the MK IV/V confusion, for some reason I thought it was the first year of MK V... I think it was from CVD's forum description "MK V = 2005-201x Golfs, GTIs, Jettas The rejuvination of the original sporty hatch!". I guess they have their forums labelled wrong.

Thanks for the heads up with everything. I don't think I will be getting C1 to do the work on the car. Not after what everyone has said.

Is there any other shops which do good work on installs for things like springs, shocks and struts? Any places in town that are recommended?

I have decided to not go with the K&N either as it seems quite pointless and i dont want to be purchasing a MAS...

2005.5 is where MK5's start, each generation is a new body style so it is easy to tell by eye. There will only be a few shops in town that will install a suspension you have not bought from them for insurance reasons. Really it is not all that hard and many of us have the tools to do it.
