  • Vw 2002 Remote Key

    Hey Guys,

Just recently both rings on my remote key have broken off. I know it is expensive to order from the dealership so I was looking on ebay. If I do order it from there where can I get it cut. Should I just not bother and pay full price? Any suggestions will help!..

    Thanks in advance!

I believe northland VW told me that they will laser cut the keys onsite..
Not sure if SS and 5th Ave will as well... I didn't inquire on price.

This happened to me a couple months ago. I was going to come up with fix but haven't gotten around to it, partly because the battery also died, so I changed to the "newer" broken key (which may have been broken since I got the car).

I will get onto working on mine, should have something ready this weekend. I will post pics, and if your interested, shouldn't be a big deal to make up a couple. Will require drilling out small holes into the case (all taken apart of course, circuitry hopefully won't be in danger).

I've a spare for a 2001 that I don't have a need for any longer. You'd need to get the blank and have it cut/programmed but you can probably save some money on the fob. PM me if you're interested.

If you can just replace the casing and not the electronics. If you replace the transponder itself you will have to take the car to the dealership to code the new key to the car. As in the case of replacing a cluster you need the SKC which the dealership is no longer able to give you

Here is what I came up with.

I realize the loop is a little big. It was quick, I will make a smaller one. The loop is made of stainless steel welding rod, so it will not rust. I pulled on it pretty hard, and it slipped a little on one side but didn't come out. I think with a tighter bend and maybe a drop of epoxy it should be solid.

It will require drilling 2 holes in the casing, and a little trimming on the opposite piece to get it to seat, but I think 1/2 hour per key tops, including making the loops.

If anyone is interested let me know. I am available to do the mod this weekend at my shop in the NE near the airport.

Finished product. I know the pics are a little unclear, the batteries in the camera were too low to run the flash. I think it turned out good. A little epoxy to close up the holes where the old loop was and it should be good to go.

I was a little off on the time to do it, probably closer to an hour per key. There was more filing to get the fit right than I thought.
