  • Auto or Manual TDI

    Hello,

I'm relatively new to this site but I'm hoping to get a Jetta TDI in the near future and I wanted to get some opinions from everyone on the transmission.

Fuel economy is one of my big concerns but the person that will be sharing the vehicle with me is reluctant to drive a manual and ultimately probably won't. While this may sound good to some that I won't have to share, the point of getting the vehicle is so that both of us will drive it.

I've been looking at some numbers from the Fuel Consumption guide at the Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency (http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportatio...ide.cfm?attr=8) and it's pretty convincing for an '03 Jetta TDI that the manual is the way to go. In the City your looking at ~800km for the auto and ~1000 for the stick (assuming 55 litre tank and I realize these numbers may or may not be actual ranges people are getting). ~200 km seems like whole lot to me. Mind you going from car that gets ~450 km to a tank, ~800 is a pretty sweet bump to.

I'm thinking that the auto is probably what the purchase will be but I'm trying to justify it to myself. Any opinions? Any thoughts on benefits of an auto over a manual, mileage aside?

    TIA.

My wife hated driving stick at first too, but I was a bastered about wanting two cars with the same parts (to ease repairs for me) but now she loves driving standard and has no problems at all.

Also factor in the cost of the auto/tip, and the extra cost of repairs if something goes wrong. Plus the powertrain loss. There's a reason Europe is 95% manual. And those women/men who didn't think they could learn manual are just fine. My wife wanted an auto but I refused and now she drives manual - and wouldn't buy another automatic even if it was free.

I really don’t mind to get a free SL AMG here. Just tell me where to get one. I will paypal you $ for the info.

Isn’t that all you care is the fuel economy? Stick of course for you but not for your partner. The only solution is the tiptronic tranny.

Auto isn’t all that bad either. Can you get a Porsche Cayenne Turbo with standard? Can you get a MB SL65 AMG with standard? If automatics are bad then why do the companies put one into their top of the line models? Funny hay.

Honestly I think that a manual transmission is not that big a deal after you've driven it for a while. The TDI has one of the friendliest manual transmissions I have driven, its very easy to shift. Moreover, the TDI feels much peppier with the manual.

That being said, if I had kids packed into my car or something, I would want an automatic (I would also want a bigger car than a Jetta).

I do have a kid in the back and a manual and they're both great. Loads of room in the jetta, and the manual is so friendly in traffic I just leave in in first with my foor off the gas and idle forward as everyone else rides the brake.

Manual also has way more pep/fun factor!

There's been some good comments here so all I will add is, go test drive both (if you haven't already). I've driven a few cars now in manual and automatic back to back. The thing I don't like is how some auto cars react to turbocharged motors. It can be a bit annoying.

I drive an automatic, get 850km / tank in the City and over 1000 on the highway. The new DSG transmission (MKV) is awesome. Although I like the control of a standard, the tiptronic is very responsive. Cost of $1400 for auto over the standard is not all that much considering you are spending 30K+ on a car.

                  my 2 cents.

Justify buying an auto however you want

The reason many of these cars are coming with autos only is the type of person to drive them (tip/dsg are borderline, but better). A Porsche Cayenne turbo is one you brought up..its an suv...mainly driven by women

the SL65 is paddle shift is it not? That's probably in there because a computer can shift a hell of alot faster than my hands.

Im not saying automatic is bad, im just saying automatics in a VW and in an SL65 are going to be day and night different

The DSG is THE only good automatic. A decent CVT comes a close second.

I have never had an automatic that I have put more than 20k km on - I can't stand them. Let it be known also that I am THE laziest person in existance.

What about a 6 speed sequential

DSG is pretty nice but i still prefer a manual.

I'm a manual whore but would drop it in a second for the audi/vw DSG. But that's the only one.
