  • Oiled air filters? Got a question.

I'm just wondering what your guys thoughts on oiled air filters like K&N or other types of short ram CAI filters. I'm asking this because i heard from someone that this could be bad on the engine someway...the turbo i'm thinking is what he told me...but i can't really remember what i was told. So if anyone has some thoughts on it let me know.

    thanks

There is no danger to the engine or turbo, there may be danger to your Mass Air Sensor, it can stop working if oil accumulates on it. It will take quite a while for this to happen, basically it just reduces the life of the sensor. This is only for oiled type cotton filters (K&N), I think with foam style filters like ITG, HKS, etc you may have better luck.

You won't see really any performance gains from a CAI or filter on a VW, except it looks cool and makes your engine sound cool. The stock airbox and air system are good enough that it flows about the same amount. If you ARE after tiny performance gains, you should really replace more than just the airbox, if you replace all of the intake from the turbo (or intake manifold on a non-turbo car) to the filter, it will give better results than replacing just the airbox. You should also make sure that the filter is in a place that gets lots of cold air.

The attached picture is something Bart noticed on VWVortex, this system really captures what a performance intake would entail. He has actually built a ram type intake with a very large inlet, foam filter, and very wide smooth straight tube back to his turbo. He is also replacing his intake manifold to flow more air (and turbo but that is another story).

Hmm what looks wrong with those two strut towers? anyone else notice it? Nice VF engineeering mounts too. If you do a search over the last couple days about MAF sensors you will get all types of info on intake filters.
