  • Any experience with MAF's?

After VAGing my car it looks as though my MAF is going south...
Looking at ECS website it appears as though the 2.0L MAF will work for my car, and is about half price of the AEB Reman'd MAF. Will this MAF work? And will it affect performance at all? I could only find one person on AW that had done this, and said he got worse mileage out of it, and reccomended against it...
    Any thoughts?

I just realized it was just the 2.0L not the 2.0LT... That would be why the performance wouldnt be up to par with it..

I would try cleaning it first, like Bart did. If that fails, you should try to get it warrantied depending on your mods. Otherwise I dunno if the 2.0 will work, probably not much difference, a maf is a maf. You can reuse your existing housing, just need the sensor bit.

        Re: Any experience with MAF's?

Im pretty sure my warranty was voided long ago... but I will try to come up with something..

I guess since the 2.0 is expecting less air, it doesnt perform as well.
When i logged #2, my g/s were way lower then they should be, so Im not sure if that can be fixed with a cleaning.. I think its replacement time

I wish that where true. A MAF is basically a hot wire that changes resitance with air speed. I am sure differnt types/resitanaces are used for different engines, would it make a huge difference? maybe not but the 2L one is can be used on TDI's so it may work on some 1.8t's.

If I do have to end up replacing the MAF, I will most likely buy the one that is designed for my engine. If I was stock I would go for the cheaper alternatie, but I am too much invested in Performance parts to go for a $40 cheaper MAF

Hmmmmm. I am waiting on the price of a proper MAF for my car now, so I will see what It ends up costing. Hopefully a connections will come thru for me!

                    Re: Any experience with MAF's?

Unplug the MAF and start the car, bring it in the dealership saying it through a code and see if it is warrantied. If you have no code you wont get it warrantied even if your block maf readings have low g/s. try that and see.

My MAf through a code and my O2 just through one yesterday. Time to get them replaced =) hopefully.

What QuA said. If you have a "bad MAF" code, they'll most likely change it "out of goodwill" although I believe the warranty is 7-yr, 120k km's.

A 2.0l one will work in a TDi. The TDi one has an extra connector which is for deceleration readings (it reads when off the throttle so the ecm can try to produce less smoke coming out the exhaust) That is the only difference.

pretty sure a 2.0 one works on 1.8t's as well, its a popular replacement mod on vortex since its half the price and pretty much the same thing

But only on the AWD engine, as far as I know.

Even if there was a 7 year warranty on the MAF's I dont think they will honor it with my stage 3 kit... I'll call and ask, but somehow I think my warranty was voided long ago.. very long ago. I found a new MAF for $72 cdn.. so maybe thats the best option right now. I was thinking of cleaning it, but if I have to spend 30 on the torx set, then about 10 on the alcohol, it may just be better to grab the new MAF for $30 more...
