  • Tranny Swap

How hard (if it’s even worth it for the price) would it be to swap a trip tonic auto out of a 03 1.8T Jetta replacing it with a 5/6 speed?

Is there another auto manufacture out there that has a tranny that will fit?

Where can I look for after market?

Your best bet would be jsut a 5 speed tranny from another 1.8t, its pretty tough though, you would need the clutch, transmission itself, shifter assembly. Check the vortex, its been done, although rarely, people will tell you to sell the car and buy a stick.

Not really worth the amount of $$/work involved. Just sell it and buy a stick if you want manual that bad.

Don't forget about a new cluster and ecu into the mix, some big $$ and some big pains in the butt. Ohh and there are no aftermarket trannys for a VW... well ok race trannys maybe...

My thoughts were to find a recked jetta and do a swap
or my dream would be to find an old lady who wants a auto
but i dont think it would be that much if i found one at a salvage yard (given i wount be able to find one) and did it all my self

Why not just trade in the car? Possibly get a dealership to take it. If its already modded you can swap the mods. Its going to be easier and in fact the Auto transmission is worth MORE for resale usually, so you could possibly do the whole deal for FREE.

                Re: Tranny Swap

there is more than just tranny, shifter and pedal box, you need clutch pressure plate, flywheel, slave cylinder, possibly ECU

Finding a good tranny in wrecked car would be really hard, they very woundable in front end collision.

We have two 01 GTI 1.8T one has cracked tranny and one we just got today so still have to find out.
