Air intake time

Ok,

My paper filter has outlived its usefulness. What are people using? I keep hearing that K&N will coat my airbox and fry my MAF (hearing it A LOT) and that 1.8t's don't like CAI (which seems odd given that it seems like every second owner has one).

Who's rocking what, how long, and what, if any, problems have you had? I'm sure this is a repost, but help unite our great country on this greatest of patriotic days . . .

As I put in another post, I just put a stock air filter back in. Better filtration than anything aftermarket, its only $14 or so, and one of the chip companies tested a while back and found no performance increase in changes to the air in a VW if your model already has a CAI (ie. the stock airbox takes its air in from the front fender area, outside the engine bay).

I fried my MAF after 25,000KM with a K&N out of the box. Didn't realize it was fried until I replaced it out of a hunch and a test I saw on tdiclub.com (put in neutral, gun the pedal, if its under 5200rpms on a diesel there is a problem). Replaced it yesterday and its better than the day Simon originally chipped it. Its an unbelievable difference. K&N is in the garbage now.

I also found when I rubbed my finger around the old MAF and airbox, I could feel a slight layer of oil film on my finger.

I'm back to stock air filter, it'll keep my engine cleaner, no decrease in performance -- a well-functioning MAF is more important to performance than any 2HP gain in an oiled air filter.

I have stock airbox with a giant hose. You can smooth out the airbox.

BTW most people have CAI for looks and the increase in noise - after market DV + CAI is as close to a BOV sound as most will get.

Samco intake hose? That looks like a good mod, if pricey.

I've run a CAI, now running a K&N with a smoothed box.....

Samco intake hose? That looks like a good mod, if pricey.

I have that as well, but its on the other side of the airbox (maf to turbo). The hose is just some smooth walled industrial hose. Personally I'd say just smooth it out and get rid of that big divider fin.

K&N have been using since new, plus home brew CAI. MAF fried 2 times not because the K&N but the faulty MAFs itself. Latest one has been using about 1.5 yrs still within specs.

What proof do you have of that? I can garranty you an oil film on a hot wire that is used to measure resistance (that is how it relates to airflow) is going to burn out very fast.

I haven't cleaned my K&N on my CAI in.. uh.. around 30,000 km and I have no MAF issues. Last time on the dyno I made within 3% of the numbers I have made every other time on the dyno.

One of these days I'll get around to cleaning it.

i reoil my filter on my CAI every 20000km or so i've done it twice now and my car has 50k on it now.. and my MAF has never hiccuped once.. you just have to oil it properly and not shove the thing into the deep fryer to reoil it.

How about I counter question here?
Why did VWOC shamelessly offer FREE replacement for 70,000km on MAF?
Can it be one of the following?
a.)They stand behind their high quality parts to make that offer.
b.)Numerous complains caused them to make the move.(Der 1-800 VW cold line operators found the statistics seems to be on the high side)
c.)For them to offer FREE replacement for each customer is still cheaper than to pay off the class-action lawsuit.
d.)act of love, sweetness.
e.)all of the above.


What proof do you want me to give? They were tested from the dealership from the previous times and the latest was tested by me on Vag-Com. Well, doesn’t matter will they eventually burn or fried to crispy. K&N renewable filter technology isn’t new. My owner’s manual did not specify what filter/parts# can be used.

That’s exactly I do. For me a quick checkup with Vag-Com is fast and easy.
