  • Rusty Aftermarket Springs

My factory springs are coated in some sort of plastic and they have no rust on them at all and they're 6 years old.

Is it normal for aftermarket springs to develop rust on them in relatively short order (say 6 months?)? Most aftermarket springs I've seen are simply painted metal.

Is it even safe to use such springs - if they have some surface rust?

    thanks in advance...

So is it safe to assume most of you don't have rust on your aftermarket springs?

Ever seen a spring from a 20 year old car? Outside is almost solid rust but they're still fine. Surface rust does nothing, ignore it.

My old MK2 had really rusty springs, but they never had to be replaced . . .just the shocks + struts. Now, if only somebody could add to me car alarm post . . . . .

Thanks LaDubDude... I would have replied to your car alarm post but I have nothing worthwhile to add... maybe go here: http://www.the12volt.com/carsecurity/carsecurity.asp

So the rest of you who've put aftermarket suspension springs on your cars aren't worried about rust or don't yet have any on your springs yet?

Well I'd agree that it's not really that big of a deal. Why the concern? Is someone trying to sell you some that are really rusty? Any spring after a couple good winters are going to show some rust, but for a spring to become "unsafe" would require substantial deterioration IMHO.

Perhaps you could give us more info, but I'm fairly sure you really have nothing to worry about.

I'm looking at a set that's coming from Ontario and, yes - they do have surface rust on them. They're supposedly 6 months on the car with about 5k kms.

Well Ontario has higher than average corrosion for sure, but 5000k should be no biggie. Unless of course you're REALLY picky about it but honestly, with a wheel on, it's pretty hard to see the spring anyway.

That's probably not much help but I can try I guess. Good luck with your decision.
