Re: Why did you by a VW?

My first car was a 1996 Ford Tortoise, which we all know basically all fords suck. Then I bought a 1995 GMC Jimmy, gas mileage was shitty. Then was a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT Coupe, that turned out to be a lemon so I traded it in for my MKIV Jetta 1.8T.

Re: Why did you by a VW?

Lets See: First Car 1980 Chevy Citation (Cream coloured)- Tranny blew out after 1 year, second car Hyundai Pony(Gold coloured) then traded the pony for a 1992 Geo Metro - (Green) Drove that for 7 years until it is was time to put a new motor in of buy another car, so I traded it for 2 thousand and bought a 1997 Ford Escort- LX (Purple) traded Escort in 2003 for 4,300.00 to buy 2003 VW Golf GLS 26,943 total purchase price. Yes I'm still making car payments on it and I love that is handles great in the wet snow for BC Should be interesting to see how it it handles in the winter here. I still need to buy a blockheater and a new winter tires, have new all seasons on now. Some days I hate my car others I love it!

Wow bump from 2005. Saw pictures on facebook. Car looks good.

A lot of people don't like VW's but they are usually the ones who haven't met the people that back the cars and the community that surrounds it.

Re: Why did you by a VW?

I bought a VW because of several reasons. Funny enough my friend works at a Suberu dealership and we always argue about this.

The engineering and build quality is good. The GTI has been in production for many many years. You will find a some of the parts used are also used in other cars. I.e take the Bentley continental. It has the same door hinge thats on my Golf. My bro in laws Escalade has a basic door hinge. The truck is only a couple of years old, but the door struggles to close now (It got stuck the other day). Seems like a small thing, but it makes you think how much thought the engineers put into the little things that make a difference over time.
The interior is ergonomically functional, good materials and does not have a cheap feel like you get in Japanese and American cars. Car feels very solid and stable at speed.
I remember driving mine home when I bought it. I could not get over how well it felt put together unlike some of the other cars I had driven.

A couple of stories. I asked a old friend of mine who used to work for the Police(UK) 'whats the difference between jap cars and German?'. He told me a story. He said there used to be two police cars in the force. One was a Mazda and the other was a Golf GTI. Both had 150,000 miles(around 241 km)on the clock. He said the Mazda drove fine and so did the GTI. But with the Mazda, the carpets, side plastic lining were worn. The seat was shaking a little. The was a odd rattle here and there. It was just little things. Where as the golf was fine.

Another friend had a Honda Civic. He then bought a BMW. After that he said he's never going back to a Jap car. I asked why. He said both cars are fast, but driving the Honda was like driving a can of coke on the highway where as the German vehicle was much more solid and stable.

VW's age very well too. Look at any old Jap car and a lot of them are called rust buckets. Look at a old VW and a lot are called 'classic's.. get the picture?

Re: Why did you by a VW?

I've only driven VW. First car was a 62 beetle. Drove that for last two years of highschool, then moved out too banff. Car was WAY to low and the roads here were too harsh for daily driving.sold it and went to the dealership and bought my wagon. Love it! I do have a e30 but it's not here and it's gonna be a slow slow build. I do have my eye on a minty mk1 a few house down down for me...it's been sitting for awhile and come spring gonna see if he want to sell.

I've got my brother hooked on VW too. He lives back in Victoria an has two VW's(mk4 and mk2) and just sold his e30. His hooked for sure.

I drove a Lexus IS300 before the Jetta, my buddy bought one, I drove his and fell in love with the comfort and the interior. In less then 2 weeks I went a bought a jetta. He had a 2.0 and to piss him off i got a 1.8T. To this day, the best decission I've made is buying a VW. It's quick and cheap on gas. I also love euros, my next car will also be a VW either an R32 or a VR6 gti mk3

Re: Why did you by a VW?

Let me think... of my VWs...

1977 Rabbit - my last gasser...

                  1980 Rabbit 4 dr diesel

                  1986 Jetta td

                  1987 Jetta na diesel

                  1994 Golf

                  1998 Beetle

                  2003 Jetta Wagen

A1 and A2 VWs are super-simple to work on. A3 and A4 less simple, but on-par with other vehicles of similar vintage. After hundreds of thousands of kms, interiors hold up and seats dont sag and stuff just works.

Re: Why did you by a VW?

First car was a 79 Rabbit, baby blue in color with a broken drivers door handle and an exhaust leak that made you smell like it if you drove to your friends house two blocks away..... With a WICKED e-brake. Second was a 92 Jetta, good car after needed a head gasket and clutch shortly after rolling over 300,000kms. Then I bought the e30 325is, great car, super tight with the bilstein and h&r combo. Next was the e36 325i, fast as hell for what I wanted, but I moved to Sundre and was still working in calgary and 50 bucks in fuel was too much on an every 3 day basis. So I ended up with the TDI. And now, I work 5 minutes away from my house. So mod the hell out of it due to the fact that on a daily basis I put 10kms on it!

                        Wow dead thread revival.

I used to have a Cavalier as a first car, it was a decent start but overall a POS. I had always had my eyes on the VW scene and on dubs in general. Took about a year of looking to find my current car, after owning a VW I doubt I could move to any North American vehicles. Each one just bugs me in some way.

Re: Why did you by a VW?

My dad's first car in Canada was a 1969 Super Beetle that he ordered from Germany. After seeing pictures of it when I was a kid made me want one. Alas my first car was the biggest boat ever, 1974 Pontiac Laurentian. My first car that I bought was a 1980 MK1 rabbit, then I had a 1985 GTI which I damn near drove into the ground. I had over 450k on it when I got rid of it. There were a few dark years where I drove some American & Jap SUVs. Since I got my MKIV Jetta and 09 Tiguan I don't think there is any other car other than a VW. Sure they have their quirks but VW has a better community than any other brand. Besides what other car than a TDI can go to Kelowna and back on the same tank?
