  • Why did you by a VW?

So, being I'm new and a quick search did not supply many answers, I thought I would throw this one out there.

What did you drive before you bought a VW? Why did you choose a VW?

I drove a Ford SVT Lightning and bought my Jetta primarily because of the fuel consumption. I was spending $80 a week with the Lightning and now it's going to be about $80 a month. (I drive 35K each way to and from work) It is taking some getting used to, not having 400hp under the hood, but my pocket book feels soooo much better. I am frankly pretty surprised at the peppyness (is that a word?). I figured it was going to be pretty lame, but it is not.

Bottom line...Driver found, I love my Jetta

I have an allegiance to Euro cars. My first car of my own was a little 318 with 140hp. It looked quick, but I was sick and tired of being slower than all the other cars out there. When I went and looked at the MKIV Jetta 24v, it got me hooked.

Re: Why did you by a VW?

My father always drove VWs (1973 Super Beetle, 1977(?) Rabbit, 1983 Jetta, 1998 Jetta) except for the dark years when he drove a 1991 MAzda 626. I bought a MkII Golf for $750 when I was in school in 2000 and put 120,000 km on it . . . great engine, but everything else fell apart. I test drove a a 1.8t back then and said 'I'm gonna own one of these'. Now I do.

Diesel. Thats the main reason I bought a VW, I drive anywhere between 1000-2000Km a week for work. I used to own a 2.0 but I was getting gas 3 or 4 times a week at 35 bucks a fill... now I get gas once a week instead. I will never buy a gas car again, here's hopeing Audi will get off there ass and offer some diesel cars.

I got one because I wanted an sport compact, and I didn't want a played out honda/acura (I sold me 92 integra for a gti.) But now that I own one and have worked on one, I love the over engineering that went into these cars. Now I own 2 euro cars and I'm already looking for my next.

Started off with a 1992 Nissan Sentra, great little car... good on gas got me to high school and back, even got me the girls (or not) then some ass hole ran a red light and broke the car in half. Next stop was the 1994 dodge colt, my current girlfriend took one look at that bad boy and it was over anyways gave that car to my old brother just 6 months ago. I started look at cars 3 months ago and was sick of see honda/acura all over the city and did not want to drive another American car... looked at an old school Porsche and for what it cost I was not getting much and then I found my 97 Jetta VR6. One ride in this car and I was sold.

Ever since I was knee high to a duck.
I remember like it was yesterday. I was going to the corner store for some smokes for my mom ( back when we could keep the change for going) and saw my 1st type 2 with the big chrome VW sign. I went into the store and got the smokes and a bag ogf chips and a pop with the change. I sat on the curb and ate the chips and I thought to myself that was a cool car. Since then I have owned scads of VW's and started my career in VW turning wrenches. I'm still at VW loving every Monday morning. Why? Because, I love what I do. It's been about 15 years since I started the trade at VW.

I wanted something with a quick engine for about 20 grand, I settled on a couple different cars but VW's are everywhere and so it was easy to find a good deal. I also looked at accord coupes and some other cars, but no domestics!

Re: Why did you by a VW?

I have had Japanese cars (Toyota, Nissan & Subaru) for 20 some years and wanted to try Euro, I will never go back to Japanese cars. If I upgrade from VW it will be an Audi or a BMW. FWIW I just took a V8 guy for a run in my stock 1.8t he can't believe the torque and how stable it feels at 160 kph. He also was impressed that it would corner a 80 kph posted at 120 going in and doing 140 coming out of it, no problem at all, that was not even pushing what it really could do. I have "pushed" my Japanese cars but I have not found a road yet that the VW feels like it has reached it's limits. I would think that the car would almost have to be doing double the posted speed limit before it started feel like it was getting challenging to drive. I can't wait to take it on a road course at race city to see what it "really" can do.

I have owned domestics in the past. All of these cars have had major problems...just after the warranty runs out. How do they engineer them to do that?? I have owned one VW in the past and loved it, 00 golf tdi. I sold all my toys so I no longer needed a truck. The car handled like a dream stock, and now with the lowering kit and tires.. Unreal. Love it so far, might have to drive all year to get rid of the warranty so I can put on the supercharger. lol Also for the price and upgrades avail, you can't top it.

                              My 2 cents worth!!

When my '82 Mazda 626 was developing a rust spot in the rear quarter panel (it had been hit in the same quarter panel, over the years, and fixed each time, but it seemed the rust would return eventually) I decided it was time to trade it in (now year 1988). After checking out all the Honda and Toyota dealerships, I tried the VW dealerships (I too, have always preferred imports, mainly due to the quality and quality control, which was sadly lacking on the American made cars). Upon accidentally finding out about the Slalom model being offered for '88, and having that model include as standard, a number of options I would have added on to say, a Jetta GL model, it turned out to be the cheapest of all the new cars I had looked at so far ($17,000). Other than owning a '67 Ford F-100 half ton for a number of years, to haul my motorcyle around in, I have always driven imports (Datsun, Mazda, and now VW. Ok, not quite true.... I had a total of 3 "beaters" I bought, throughout a 3 year period, so I wouldn't have to drive the Jetta all the time--a Dodge 2000 Arrow 2 dr., a Subaru 2 dr., and a Honda Civic DL 4 dr. (after fixing up and cleaning the interior (previously driven by a smoker-big time!!!), and getting the whole car repainted after that really bad hail storm, and adding back chrome trim on the trunk lid, and missing badges, it hardly classified as a "beater" any more...). I continue to receive compliments on how my Jetta looks!!!
