  • DIY $17.00 bike attachment for OEM racks

This is my first time wrighting one of these, so bare with me.

    fist things first.

you will need some sort of fork mount to attach to the rack. This is the one I used. I got it from M.E.C for 16 bucks

First thing that you need to do is drill out the holes to 3/8"

      Third, you must buy some,
      - 2, 3/8 carriage bolts (shortest you can find) i had to cut mine with a hack saw
      - 2, locking nuts, the ones with the nylon in the middle
      - 4, 1/2 washers (1/2 hole that is)

OK, now we are outside on the rook rack.

open up one end and remove the black rubber cover for the bar.(This will be used later to fill in the spaces between the fork mounts).

Slide the fork mount in the channel of the rack and space it out according to where you want your bikes. I did mine about 6" from the end so that my bikes handel bars won't knock together.

now tighten down your assembly so it is solid.

here is a pick of the fork mounted and tightened down.

Just a quick note. the bars should be spaced further apart than normal. I think it was 44" from the center of the front bar to the center of the rear bar.

I have a 2dr model, so the rear bar can be mounted further back. I dont know if this is possible for 4dr racks.

              Now for the rear tire.

I used some straps that I bought for a couple of bucks from campers village. I looped it around and sinched it tight.

now step back and admire your work. your done.

                Just a couple of notes:

-the carriage bolt heads (square part that mounts in the channel) might put little dents in it, it most likely will. If you are anal and can't handel it, don't do this at all. The nice part is the rubber covers it when not in use so it dosen't really matter.

-also keep all of the extra rubber pieces that you will get after cutting it to accomidate the carriage bolts. It is nice to put it back in so there are no gaps when your bike racks are bars are not in use.

                - I have higer resolution pics of all of the ones posted (to large to post) so if you need any just let me know.

hope it works out if you try it. If you have any questions just ask.

I would suggest a 1.0-1.5 tube cut to length to cover the metal band. Looks good, and the price is a lot less than what I paid for my racks, that's for sure.

                          nice idea!

I was even thinking a piece of hose would work.

For the back tyre just use a big piece of velcro, fast on and off, no damage to the wheel, and holds very tight
