  • Mmmm new exhaust smell (autotech exhaust review)

So today is day 2 of my new autotech exhaust, courtesy of EU Tuning (thanks Simon!). I'm quite happy overall. It's not nearly as loud as I thought it would be. Rather, it's a little louder overall -- pretty much inaudible at 50/60k -- and has a really sweet smooth deep bass tone. I've had a couple chances to mash the peddle and that's when it gets into more of a beautiful resounding scream. I've been driving with my rear seats down on account of lugging around my old exhaust so it'll probably be a bit quieter even when I put them back up.

It looks top notch, too. I picked up an OEM cut out valence and had it painted, just like my old valence. The tips are shiny and substantial looking, though I wouldn't have minded if they were slightly larger, maybe a half inch each. Still, my car now looks complete and I'm very happy about that.

I had the install done at Carline on your guys' recommendation and they were really nice and did a great job. The installer said he was impressed with the exhaust's fitment. However, the clamps that came with it were pretty much useless and leaked, so he ended up just welding the sections together, which suits me fine.

As far as the topic title goes, there's definitely some kind of new exhaust smell going on. I don't mind it. It's faint, like a sweet sort of burning smell. I assume that's normal? Anyways, I'll try and post pics later on.

Edit: duh, forgot to talk about performance. I am so hungover. Everything seems to happen a bit more quickly. Throttle response is better, turbo spool up seems faster. The car feels lighter in an odd sort of way. It's impossible to gauge how much gain is real and how much is psychological, but it's all good.

That smell should go away after a week or so of driving.

Where did you get your valence painted, and how much?

Also, I'm really starting to hate the look of the tips on my catback.... they look nasty. Anyone know where I can buy some new tips to have welded on?
Sidewalks are for normal walkin.... aint no room for fancy walkin....

I got it done at Automation (now a Service Collision Repair franchise). They charged me $200 including swapping them, which is a bit high, but my usual guy wasn't there. Still worth it.
