    Re: Attempted Break-in

I never use my keyhole, and am now giving serious consideration to how I could connect an extra battery to the lock so that anyone trying to break into my car got a “shocking” surprise.

OK, sorry, that was a horrible pun. I know the idea isn’t feasible, but really, take a few seconds and picture somebody trying to break into your car. Now picture them jerking around as a current runs through whatever they’re jamming into your lock and up into their arm. Satisfying, no?

Side note: I hope when we were spotted on Elbow Drive I wasn’t lost in my Axl dance. If anyone ever sees me driving and thinks I’m having a seizure you can relax, and remind yourself that I have everything that Guns ‘n’ Roses ever recorded on my Phatbox. Sorry y’all. I know it’s not pretty.

Your Axl dance looks a lot like the "shocking" surprise you described.

It is not the battery that will give them a shock you need a coil to do that. A coil will put out 20,000 + volts but low amps. It gives you a killer static jolt, enough to make your elbow hurt for a few min. You need to isolate the metal lock part from the rest of the car body with neoprene or rubber fittings and then charge the lock. An old coil from a domestic will work. Just remember not to close the door with your bum or lean against your drivers door lock. The good thing is that the thief will see the blue arc jumping from the lock to the screw driver and it will be to late, they will be zapped.

I don't have a rear door and am not sure if the cap from the passenger side is compatible. I don't have power windows, so that's not an issue.

I wonder why there is such a difference in part prices though. It's $20 for my plasic cap plus paint ($30).
OK, the rear cap is part # 3b4 839 879. It'll fit any front door as long as it's from the same side (IE - cap fr. rear driver's side fits front driver's side). The part was actually $6.63 (for the solid cap). There are three things you can do -

1)replace the cylinder, cap, whole shibang
2)just put a solid cap over the hole (no new cylinder - just a hole under the cap)
3)stuff the hole with epoxy and cap it (no more key, but not more easy break in).

I just went with the cap (which comes primed). Thanks to Ryan and others who pointed me in the right direction by laying out the options when my ride was violated.

Awesome. I might do the second fix as a temporary measure. I will replace the cylinder and everything once it comes in in a few weeks though.

I'm just shocked that with the lock broken you can unlock the car with a popscicle stick, or anything else for that matter. No alarm, nothing - just "come on in."

We can't all have your Napoleon Dynamite dance skills. I'm just happy you're so willing to share them with the world at large, one restaurant at a time. Best way to get a meal comped I've ever seen.

Rather than the shock system I've decided to set up my car to play David Hasselhoff's greatest hits at maximum volume, relentlessly, if somebody breaks in. I need to work out the details on that plan, but I am confident that if somebody breaks into my car they'll still be rocking in the fetal position, with their hands clamped over their ears, when I find them.

Good call Nox. Rather than an alarm, some dubs came with the Hasslehoff - a system that give someone really big hair and brings them to their knees with auditory hell. Ironically, this system unfortunately caused both an increase in break-ins AND in sales of Hasselhoff's latest CD in Deutschland.

Thats what I did as well, good idea to keep a spare battery for your keyless entery in the trunk........just a good percautionary measure...really sucks when your i the middle of nowhere and the battery decides to die and yes the spare key is at home.....

If I ever ran for a political office I'd build my entire platform around "No Lululemon pants in public. Ever. Put that on when you get to the yoga studio." My irrational hatred of people wearing workout clothing as casual wear is a core element of my personality.

So it's safe to say that unless we're at an Extreme Ultimate Air Guitar contest with a top prize of $1 million I will never wear Axl Rose white spandex shorts.

I'm not making any promises about wearing a kilt, though. I refer you to my sig.
