  • H&R Cupkit Question

This is probably a dumb question but seeing as I don't know much about this particular set-up I'll ask it anyway. Is the H&R Cupkit fully adjustable just like any other coilover suspension? The reason I ask is because I am looking into getting a new suspension set-up, but I want to be able to raise it back up to stock height for the winter.

Any feedback is helpful. Maybe other suggestions as well?!?!

One other thing, is Dave back doing "weekend work"?

    Thanks,

Only coilover suspensions are height adjustable, a cup kit is not adjustable. To be able to raise the height you will need coilovers which are generally a harsher ride.

Thanks for the input. Does anybody have anything good/bad to say about the H&R kit, or on particular coilover set-up? I would really appreciate help in making my decision on suspension.

        Thanks

I've got the FK cupkit on my car. The rears are adjustable ( i think )..ride is good, and the price was awesome ($610 shipped from AMI)

I think the cupkit is perfect for a daily driver, the ride isnt as harsh as coils and it saves you a bunch of cash.

            Re: H&R Cupkit Question

a buddy of mine out here just put the h&r cupkit on his golf. here's what he had to say:

Just had my H&R Cup Kit installed on my GTI. I can't stop smiling. Not only is the ride much smoother than stock, it handles great! I hit corners at speeds that I would never have tried before. Hit bumps at high speed and it was very stable. It felt like my old Scirocco without the harsh ride. The drop is just right and fairly even between front and back.

            Not quite stock anymore...

Thanks. AMI is that place in Vancouver, correct? So you didn't have to pay brokerage or anything right?

Jason was a pleasure to deal with, they are based out of toronto and the 610 for the FK was probably a special, regardless the $610 was incl. tax AND shipping haha!

                    Re: H&R Cupkit Question

You mention you want coilovers because you want to be able to raise the car to stock height in the winter.

Coilover kits in general aren't designed to be raised to stock height. KW V3 can be custom configured to be raised to stock height but it's expensive.

Most coilovers lower the car some by default. Then you're also able to slam it. But to raise it back to factory height? Not likely.

If there is something out there I'd be interested in it,too.

I probably should have been more clear. I own a 04.5 GLI which has sport suspension already, now I don't want to be able to raise it back to stock (higher than sport) ride height, I just want to be able to raise it back up after slamming it so my front lip isn't a snow plow!

I do know of a kit that actually begins life slightly higher than stock and can be lowered to over 3 inches below stock. I believe it comes out of Montreal and some of the Rally folks use it. It's similar to a Weitec design with the helper spring and also had a piggy back reservoir. Seemed decent, but I have no experience with it and am unsure of the quality but I did talk to the shop that sold it and he said he's had some happy customers. The other cool thing is the shock can be fully rebuilt if it wears out so you never have to replace it.

                        Anyway, i'm rambling.

Edit: and oh yea, as far as the "I want to raise it in the winter" thing goes, I'm not sure that's the best reason to fork out extra for coilovers, I think basically everyone on here will tell you they are fine for the most part in the winter, plus, I've heard a few stories of coilovers becoming "non-adjustable" after a short time in the elements. You're taking a hit in the comfort department and the wallet department for a bit of adjustability.

BUT, if you're plan is to go lower than 2 inches then forget everything I said because that's what you'll need to buy to get waaaay down there.

So it sounds like coilovers might not be the best after all. Thanks for all the input people.
