  • When old age sets in...

For all you "young pups"--stay young as long as possible!!!

After owning my '88 Jetta for 17 years, I discovered, last week, that I had SOMEHOW lost my original locking gas cap... Not sure how I did it, (senility? I am 55...) as I have been faithfully locking it since I bought my Jetta...

I have just ordered a new locking gas cap with a separate key for just over $60 at Northland VW--should be in this week..

I could have ordered a gas cap with a lock, and had it keyed to my Jetta key (like my former gas cap was), but was told by a locksmith that they could do it, ONLY if they could get the lock out of the gas cap. I decided I could live with an extra key, and a lot less hassle, of finding, and paying extra for a locksmith to key it. This type of gas cap was $80, but Northland said they would give it to me for the price of the one with the key...

I still would like to think someone swiped the gas cap, although they said at Northland, that prying off a locking gas cap would really do a number on the cap. Or, maybe I put the gas cap back on, but didn't lock it??? Man....

Anywho, just a reminder to take care of your gas cap--they aint cheap to replace!!!

Mk4's don't have locking gas caps, although the cover is locked via an actuator. I think that locking gas caps on ones without a lcoking door are cheap insurance from some drunk @$$ pissen in your tank.

That's too bad, sounds like everything on your car is original. Oh well, at least the new one will still be OEM.
