Sadly, I neither have the experience, equipment, garage, nor tools to do such a job myself. Part of the problem is that I need intercooler and inlet pipes fabricated, and there isn't really a good way to do this without the rest of the stuff on the car. So the ideal option is to find someone that will make me the pipes to my specs and do the install as well.

I am out of money right now anyway, hopefully I get a job this month...

      Re: The time has come!

Okay so here it goes! I talked to Ken and this is what he told me.

After reviewing a couple of the kits we decided upon the GT28RS kit, he essentially told me the same thing as you just said Kor in reguards to the FBI kit and that he had no experience with it so he couldnt say whether it was a good kit or not, but APR and ATP probably are better made then FBI. He also told me that with the GT28RS, APR Big turbo program (Which is upgradeable onto my APR ECU), and injectors, and all that stuff, plus the kit with intercooler, and install would come to around the 6500 dollar mark (give or take a bit). This is with 15 hour install time, and free dyno tuning. So 6500 bucks said and done, and the gains would be potentially 300 whp. He also told me that there are 2 cars in town with this kit and setup in them and their both pretty hardcore from what ken tells me. Ken really knew a ton about the turbo kits and I was impressed by what he told me. . . I dont know what kti Im gonna go for tho, Im thinking the GT28RS is sounding pretty nice, and its in my price range. Ken said it would take 4-6 weeks to get in and about 3 days in install (at the most) so I guess we'll see. But yeah, lemme know what you guys think.

      Thanx

I got a call back from Light speed innovations in Red deer, and they told me (along with a couple other people) that 6700 was way too much to pay for a kit and that they could build me one for less. I was a little warry about a custom kit from them but upon talking to Juan down there he was quite knowledgeable about the whole set up. Hes going to do some research on VW kits to answer some of my questions and hes going to get back to me. He is going to get back to me on my quote also. They are quite a reputable company, so it has peaked my interest and I will most likely go with them just because they have been recommended to me and really know cars. We'll see how things go on monday when they call me back tho to check things out. Right off the bat they're charging less for install about 10 hours where as concept 1 is charging 15. . .but i guess we'll see what they have to say.

Also my buddy gave me this website to teach me more about porting and polishing, so I thought id post it up here cause i thought it was pretty informative. Seems like a logical approach to any high performance engine, but Juans going to get back to me on that also, if its good for 1.8ts or not.

Im feeling pretty good about this place Ill let you guys know what they tell me.

Of course a custom place is going to charge less than APR. All custom places will be cheaper than APR. What you pay for in APR is the thousands of hours of testing on this specific engine and properly tuned/engineered for your exact engine to run perfectly right out of the box.

If I could have APR stage3 for $6500 and a custom no-name local for $5000 I would probably go with APR just because of the no headaches and the being able to sleep at night.

Edit: and from your questions, it looks like you need to put a few hours reading into the 1.8t technical forum on Vortex, talk to the guys who have these big turbo setups on your engine and get their input. Not one of them will tell you to port/polish the engine, a few of them have just for shits and giggles and they will tell you there aren't any gains worth the money.

            Re: The time has come!

On a turbo motor you will only see real gains by porting the exhaust side of the head and even then the gains will be pretty minimal for the time involved.

Also, if you are going ot dump this much cash in to things spend a wee bit more and get the manifold and turbine section of the turbo ceramic coated. There is some love there for sure.

What does that do? Getting it ceramic coated?

Another thing to keep in mind is how easy it is to have your car towed to the shop where you got your work done if (when) something goes wrong. Would you rather hop down to Concept 1 or flat bed it to Red Deer? Especially if you're talking custom setups, hickups are inevitable.

Man I had to go back to a shop 3-4 times just for a custom EXHAUST!! I can't imagine a custom turbo setup.
