So whats the real deal on aftermarket stereos? Has anyone had any troubles at the dealer when taking it in for service? Do you take it out before you take it for service?

I'm thinking of getting something aftermarket for a bit better sound but I don't really want the hassle of dealing with the dealer giving me trouble. thanks.

Bah, if they give you a hard time for an aftermarket stereo Id flip them a quick bird and head over to a dealer that would like your money haha. They need to be able to prove your stereo was a contributing factor to whatever is broken (assuming something breaks) to be able to void warranty

I am not sure if you've read this before... if you have the "Monsoon" OEM stereo, it can be tricky to convert to an aftermarket stereo. Something to check on before making any purchases!

Theere is a wire on the back of our stock stereoes that they use for diagnosing the car. When geting an aftermarket deck and installnig it you have to make sure you hook it up properly or you CAN damage their units.

I have heard that as well, there is that 1 wire that you need to do something with so the VW scan tool will work. with that wire not hooked up, the VW tech cannot check.

The problem is the K wire which the diagnostic data is transfered on. Some installers mistake this line for ground so you have 12V running on this line and when the tech plugs their diagnostic tool it goes poof. Really they just need to measure the voltage on that line first but they never do. There is no protection built into the VAG-5051 etc yet rosstech has had protection and a visable indicator that the K wire is high for years

I have an alpine in my mk4 jetta, and my acc switch does not turn the headunit on. I have to turn the key to the on position to get the stereo to work. Have any of you had this problem? How did you get around it? Until I fix it I guess I won't be going to any drive-in movies

I haven't had any issues with the dealership with my stereo. The only issue I had is with my auto up/down switch for the windows was affected. Seems to have something to do with how hard you jam your stereo in there

Basically someone spliced into the wrong power wire when installing the stereo.

The visions guy doing the install said that there was no ACC wire running to the stock stereo. Guess I'll press them to fix it right.

Did you happen to have a double din radio in there before? I have heard some double dins don't have an accessory wire as the CANbus tells the unit when to turn on and off. Does your stereo still stay on when you turn the car off but leave the key in?
Edit: BTW tell the guy there is an easy to access accessory line right under the relay panel right above the drivers deadpetal.

The stock one did stay on when the car was off and the key was out (I think...). It only shut off when the door was opened. The alpine only stays on when the car's key is in the ON position, whether or not the car is one or off.

The visions dood tried to hook up to the acc through the panel you are referring to, but he must have tapped into the switch that makes my car rattle like hell b/c there aint no ACC power

How can you tell if the car has double dins? What is a double dins?
