I've never experienced it, but the posts I have read liken it to stepping on the gas hard, letting up, stepping down hard, letting up, repeat over and over again. Kind of a jerkyness. Perhaps that is an exaggeration though, as I said I have never surged (cause I am stock, doh).

i surge on the highway sometimes in 5th. if you look at your boost gauge, it bounces from 15 to 5 and back up and back down repeatedly, and it feel's like its jerking back and forth like Kor said. although its not that harsh, you try to accelerate and you can't.

Your Tip trans will never have surge occurs, because if the TCM feels lack of power then the only action will do is downshift gears to match the engine output. Surge will only happens on a standard trans. The biggest fault is the driver who lack of sense of road condition to match engine speed and gear. The best way to interpret surge is to cruise the car a slow speed and put with unreasonable high gear.

Sudden loss of exhaust gas to push the turbine. Well said.

It was to my understanding no matter the type of engine, auto or manual it required the diverter valve. If you had too much boost it could wreck the oem dv on a tipronic transmission. Therefore you would need a new DV for constant high boost and no surging.

One guy posting here has experimented with the screw on the N75 valve and gives a simple explanation of the effect.

I am not saying to do this and definately not to mess with this kind of thing without a boost guage.

Well it still looks like the Tiptronic DV is holding up. Im 100% sure it doesnt matter what transmission you have, if you over boost your DV will fail cause its OEM plastic junk =P ... But its been holding strong. Only thing is the gravel on the road is getting my windshield all cracked... grr!!

Is not so much the occasional rare big chip that appears which bothers me... I've got one or two that I need to have filled and its not a big deal. Its just that the windshield starts to accumulate tiny pinhole sized spots all over it... looks like its always dirty even when its not. Grr!

I was just stating it was the same OEM DV. Someone earlier stated the tiptronic DV didnt need to be replaced.

I even noticed a chip on my hood. YIKES.
