  • Pennzoil Synchromesh update

OK - I got my trannie drain plug bit from Metalnerd (great to deal with BTW) and swapped out my old trannie gunk for new trannie gunk, the latest gunk being Synchromesh (manual transmission fluid for GM made by Pennzoil). I noticed a difference right away.

    Second gear grind - GONE!
    Clunky shifts - GONE!

Sum it up in one word? Smoove . . . now let's just hope it stays that way. The a$$ dyno has been wrong before!

Do you need to flush the old fluid out?

Want to to rent out your tool? I think a few of us would like to do the change and I don't mind chipping in for the price of the tool (it's not like I'll use it anytime soon). Assuming you have the plug remover it's a fast process no?

EDIT: Noticed location = Halifax. Pwned.

I asked myself the same question and here are the answers I found -

1)Don't bother flushing as the trannie fluid in there is non-reactive with Synchromesh (we'll see)
2)Run the Synchromesh for like 2000Km, then empty and refill with fresh stuff

Dunno . . . I think that I'll probably drain and refill again just to be on the safe side. Why not? It's less than $25 and it burns some time. I'm still looking for info on whether or not mixing the Synchromesh with the residual VW fluid will cause problems, but have found nothing to indicate that it will anywhere, including Vortex.

Let me make this clear - I'm trying this out only because I read about it on Vortex and I really know nothing more than what I've read there and on the Pennzoil site about the chemical makeup of it. If I find anything negative (truly negative - not 'I hate Synchromesh because . . . ' stuff) I'll let everybody know, but I've read A LOT about it and, like i said, mostly good stuff.

It's a $25 bit - If I was closer to the cows and wheat, I'd pass it around for free

Syncromesh is some good stuf. I like it because it is very compatible with gold metals which is found in the VW mk4 trans. I was thinking of using it but always was afraid to try. So how many miles are on the car after the gear oil change?

It is also possible to change it with a 17mm hex head bolt with a couple nuts on it. But the metalnerd tool is much nicer!

Yes, Synchromesh is supposed to be compatible with all yellow metals (which is good since most synchros are brass as far as i know). I've only put about 250km on the car since the fluid swap . . not long term test territory, but so far so good. My primary concern with the stuff isn't its metal compatibility, but whether or not i'm only feeling smoover shifts only because it's a different weight fluid than the VW stuff.

                    Re: Pennzoil Synchromesh update

I am not a fan on GM or the yellow bottle brand.

It sure sounds weird to me for the snake oil cure for the second gear grind. If you have a bad second gear the only cure for the problems is by replacing new parts. Or possibly you didn’t shift gears as hard as before.

Fair enough, but if I need a new synchro, I need a new sychro. I figured I'd try the $25 snake oil first before the $500 trannie overhaul. And, no, I'm not shifting slower than before - my shift speeds are the same or faster. It wouldn't be really testing the stuff if I shifted with my purse after the swap. Like I said, so far so good but only time will tell.

There are two types - regular stuff (which I used) and stuff with "friction modifiers". The regular stuff was the most referenced in Vortex forums and Honda forums, so I went with it. It's also cheaper. i'll get a part # for you.
