  • Putting the summer shoes on

So I am going to put on the rims today as I have been running the steals from the day I got I car. Took a look at the condition of the rims and there are some scratch’s and rubs on them… what would you do?

    Refinish them
    Just get new rims
    Live with it
    Run the steals year around

I ran those as my winters on my car Anyway they look nice refinished in a gunmetal or something but you should be very low to make them look best. If you have can spare the money get some 16s or 17s for the summer it will look the best. The cool thing about MK3 VR6s is you can run MK4 and TT wheels so you can always pick up some used Longbeaches or Montes, just need to change the rubber and I might now where you can get some nice 17 inch tires

Because of limited wheel refinishing options, as well as high cost of refinishing, I would just save up and buy some nice 16/17" wheels. They will also look a lot nicer than the OEM wheels in my opinion, and probably not cost much more than any kind of repair or refinish effort.

As mentioned by Blair, you can often get used OEM Mk4/TT wheels cheap and they will look very good. For example Monte's, LB's, or TT-5 spokes which I personally like a lot on a Mk3.

You could put the Porshe wheels Simon is selling (~$750) on a Mk3 and it would be amazing and very unique in town, however that would require adaptors as well.

Vortex has plenty of aftermarket wheels for sale used. Also check VWDOV.

If you do buy aftermarket wheels, especially larger ones, remember they will need to be driven carefully and cleaned to be kept in good condition, otherwise they will not last long (wheels can take a lot of abuse). I am the 2nd owner of my Jetta and the previous owner absolutely tore up his LB's, which is why I use them as winter wheels now.

If your budget is limited or you just don't like spending that much cash on something with such limited usefulness, I can totally understand that perspective too, you could try thinking of some kind of amateur refinishing or maybe powdercoating?

I am not sure I understand spacing? You can run a variety of widths and offsets but probably the easiest is around 7" wide with around 30-40 offset.

Agreed with the aftermarket 16/17"'s, they are VERY cheap to buy, and to put tires on....better off to look at that option than refinishing....

I would say hold off on the wheels until you get some drop. putting bigger wheels on a car that isn't lowered looks horrible IMO.
