did anyone check out the install instructions on http://www.phatnoise.com/vw/support.htm??

it seems pretty easy. for those of us that do not have the cd-changer, is that wiring harness already there that connects to the head unit?

and do we need to buy the installation brackets??

    eric.
It's the wiring that goes from the headunit. It plugs in just like a CD changer would. There are two installation kits available: one for the CD changer bracket location and one bolted to the side of the hatch. (At least for golf/GTI).

I'll be doing a custom installation when mine comes in. It will be mounted inside the cubby without having to cut into it.

Yes, the wiring harness is already there. If you pull off the little cubbyhole cover, you will see the harness sticking out from the front. And yes, you also need to buy the installation brackets. The install is so simple and looks really good too!

        thanks, sounds super duper easy!!

also, for those of you who already have one, do you guys use it in the winter? does is have any problems when it gets down to like -40degC? i know my laptop complains (beeps and won't boot up) when you try powering it on after it is left in the car overnight at -20degC??

I ordered the installation kit too - it was only $15-ish.

a buddy of mine has a few for sale here in town, he's asking 240ish, maybe you can deal on that, not sure. anyway, PM for details if you're interested. i think he has them now, so no wait, and no shipping and no customs.

I got confirmation of my order today and the unit is shipping Friday. I was going to try and rig up my own bracket, but now I'm thinking of getting theirs.

My only concern with the unit is that it won't work properly because I have a factory CD player in the dash. I'm just hoping that I'll be able to switch to the Phat system with no probs. It should work, but stranger things have happened.

You won't be able to use the dash player but I bet you can sell it on the tex for what you paid for the phatbox lol. You should also have no problems wirring it as your car should still have the factory wirring.

I am gonna get a lashing from the woman when the phatbox shows up.

I JUST bought a Dell Axim x50v and a 2.2gb microdrive under the pretense that I would get an adaptor for the car and use it as my music source (among other things.. like playing games during meetings). How can one resist a deal like that phatbox?

I've got a 40 gb drive laying around that I am not using so once I get it I'm gonna try tossing it in to the cartridge. It runs on Linux so I figure I can do some fiddling with it and get it to see a larger drive.

^^ I tried that, and it wasn't having any of that. There is something in the way they set up the partition that I can't figure out. It uses two partitions PHTSYS, and PHTDATA. It is the PHTSYS partition that I couldn't duplicate. The other partition can be formatted and reformatted all you like and it doesn't matter. I did alot of searching on the matter and couldn't find much in the way of getting it to work with a drive other than the one it comes with.

I'll be extremely interested in seeing pics of your install tintin. If there is a way to do this... I'll be next in line to grab one of these before they're all gone.

She still thinks the total is still under $20,000. NOPE. I'm glad she doesn't read these forums.

I read on some forum that if you clone the partition then extend it out to 32 gig it works dandy. You will lose 8 gigs on a 40 gb drive, but you still get 12 gigs over the 20.

I've seen pictures of it done, but I want something better than people have done before. I'll be sure to take some pictures for you. My brother (who has pefectly custom/restored a 914 and is an aircraft mechanic - who needs to custom build parts all the time - will be helping me out with this one. I do expect that cutting of the aluminum sides will be in order, however.

It will be a couple of weeks before I have a chance to do it. (Still waiting for it to come to me anyway.)
