You can use the brackets, but there's another part that bolts to the phatbox. I think it's slightly different than the one that bolts to the CD changer.

Hey I'm interested in the Phatbox just not sure how much I would use it, where to install it etc...

I can pick one up here in Courtenay but then there is PST, install etc...

thanks for the info. I thought the phatnoise actually came with brackets, but you're right it looks like they're separate.

Got mine, installed pretty quick, but had to replace sony with stock headunit.

Very happy with it overall - the stock unit definately doesn't pound as well as the aftermarket, but I'm old enough the volume doesn't have to be blasting anymore. :( But I love stock deck look.

Did anyone have a problem making the connection? Installed no problem but I can't get the cd changer connection (03 Jetta Sedan) to fully connect.

I can get the male female to come together but can't get it to lock the connection. Pins won't slide into stock connector (I removed the plug that was on it).

No corrosion or damage to either of the connector's.
                Cheers,

I had the same problem, had someone else figure it out for me. Pretty much had to wedge in one side, get it locked in, and then wedge in the other side.

Got it installed... Now the software:

Is anyone using the new version of PhatNoise Media Manager?
Is it worth paying the 14.95 or 29.95 for the unlocked version?
                    Cheers,

I'm using the free downloaded updated version, and have no complaints at all - not sure what other features I'd need. What does the pay version have that you're after?

This thing kicks ass, I love it.

Edit: Just checked for you - if you install from CD then go options->get updates, you will get the lastest version for free. 2.30 is the latest.

Basically I want to be able to drag select iTunes and then rip a bunch of my CD's onto the DMS. From the PhatNoise site:

"What's new in 3.0 vs. PhatNoise Music Manager 2.3?

For starters, the software has been completely redesigned to provide a clean new "look and feel" and give you access to all of the software's features in one window. You can see your library instantly, create new playlists, digitize your CD collection into a wide variety of music formats, and transfer content to a DMS cartridge, a CD or a PocketBox with one click, all from a centralized interface. In a nutshell, all of the great features of earlier software versions you have been using are part of PMM3.0, but they are more accessible and more usable than ever. New functionality has also been built in for all users, including album art display, support for playback and organization of video files on the desktop, and an optional "sync" feature to keep your DMS and your desktop collection completely up-to-date with each other.

There are some brand new premium features now available as an optional upgrade: The premium bundle includes AAC codec support for encoding and playback on your PC and your PhatBox. (Please note that Apple iTunes AAC files are not supported at this time), and exciting tools from Gracenote, including Music ID waveform identification technology and automatic collection tagging with Gracenote Clean."

Since you bought a PhatBox, you only need the "upgrade" version at $15. The best part about the upgrade is that it allows you to play non-protected AAC (ie: .m4a) files. You can NOT play DRM protected AAC files sold on the iTunes Store (ie: .m4p).

Since I've already ripped most of my music in AAC with iTunes, I bought it so that I wouldn't have to re-rip things (and because AAC sounds better). Well worth the $15.

Edit: you still won't be able to "drag select" and drop your files onto your PhatBox. You will need to use the Phatnoise Media Manager and import the songs into it's database. Then you can copy them to your Phatbox. It's a relatively painless proceedure, but ungodly slow. In the PMM you can setup a directory to monitor on startup and it will sync your PMM database with the contents of the directory.

Thanks Billip. Now that I've got the upgrade I now need to decide on what format/spec to import my cd's to my HD!

Arguement online seems to be between AAC, Ogg Vorbis, and Lame.

What are people taking their CD based tunes into their online library as?

I use iTunes for my home listening.

I use good ole MP3 LAME 320 VBR min. bit rate 160, no high cut, low cut below 25 Hz.

I considered FLAC but I didn't like the lack of ID3 tagging features.
