  • MK5 Jetta Review!

Well today when working on some wiring on my car Brent and myself ran out of repair wires so we went to 5th ave to pick some up.

We ran into Derek (ginch) and got to check out the mk5 jetta upclose and take it for a test drive.

First off it looks alot better in person that the pictures.
Next is the amount of new features it has compared to the current mk4s lots of little stuff you'll notice like the interior lights, console, armrest, buttons, sunroof to name a few
The stock seats are nice but they are definetely made for an american fat ass as they are quite a bit wider than previous mk4 seats. Still comfy tho.

Well for the drive. For my first 1/2 I went in straight auto mode and the tranmission and the new 5cyl engine are awesome. Perfect for just going around town lots of power and very smooth.

The new jetta also has a 6spd tiptronic so I flipped into Tip Mode.. This tranny is way better than the mk4 tips. it shifts really quickly and no jerkiness to it at all. I enjoyed driving the car in this mode.
The new suspension on these cars is freakin sweet! The car handles so good with the 'stock' suspension i can't wait to see what factory sport springs do for the GLIs and GTIs. The steering is also new and its very wierd at first and very loose but once you start driving its really awesome.

Overall I'm going to have to say I'm buying a mk5 in the next year or so. I am waiting for the GTI as I like it better than the jetta but both cars i'd gladly put in my driveway.

The upcoming powerplants are going to make these are sick! 2.0T and 3.2 will really move these suckers. The baseline 5 cyl is 10000x better than the current mk4 2.0 flavour.

The aftermarket for these cars should catch up soon and I can't wait to see what they do with them.

For anyone currently doubting them please go drive one. I was very weary of them from the pictures, etc but once driving one its totally different. I give the mk5 platform 2 thumbsup.

Thanks again to Derek (ginch) for letting Brent and myself take the car out for a test drive.

Yes big thumbs to Dereck for leting us drive that awesome handling car, hope you like the doughnuts
I wouldn't say the steering is loose, it is just it turns sooooo easy and the turning radius of the car is utterly awesome. I was so surprised when we where going to leave thinking we would have to back up to pull a u turn but it turned around with tons of room to spare. The steering also gives the perfect about of feedback, I personaly would like just a tad more but it is really fine where it is. Now handling, utterly surprised. We took the off ramp off of 16th to barlow and Ryan was holding on for dear life (we where not going all that fast though) and there was zero! body roll. That sucker stuck to the road like noones business. The only thing I don't like is the narrow view with the rearview mirror through the back window, but the sideview mirrors that are now taller make up for it. Really the only things I would like to see in the car is a different matterial for the headliner (and it to be black), smoked tails and dropped a inch and I would totally hit that car.

I'll still hold out for the golf/GTI platform! Good to hear a good review...I'm sure the Jetta is a good purpose built car....

yea alex i'll say for sure the GTI is the winner for this gen but for alot of consumers the jetta will work great... i'm positive its going to sell very well and the fact they brought over really nice colors like plat grey make it work well.

honestly after driving this car i'll be holding onto my jetta now and picking up a 2nd year build GTI (let some bugs out )

see pg three of the original mk5 thread for that comment which I posted like 2 weeks ago LOL

I'm still sticking with my rating of 2 thumbs down for the jetta, it may drive great but damn the looks just kill it IMO. Can't wait to see the GTI/Golf though, I think once modded it will definately be a super hot car.
