  • Oil for a TDI

What is everyone using for oil in their TDI's? Ours is brand new and the manual says we should change our oil at 8K but we'll probably do it sooner than that...maybe 5K or even 4K. What is the best to use? (conventional, semi-synthetic, synthetic)....what brands etc.

I know that a lot of people probably use differnet things but any advise would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Use the search
But I will tell you anyways, since you have a PD TDI you are limited to dealer oil changes unless you special order your oil of which there is only a couple brands that make the right oil (a search on the TDIclub will tell you which). I do believe your first oil change should be within a couple K. The reason for this is to remove metal particulates from engine break in after the first 2 oil changes I see no reason with changing the oil every 8-10k. I personally change my oil about every 15K as I use a long life synthetic oil.

      Stonewall,

Thanks for the advice! I totally makes sense to get her in early for her first oil change. We'll take her in for the first change around a couple geez!

        Re: Oil for a TDI

I have a good friend who does oil analysis for finning in edmonton and we where chatting one day and he said with good oil you could get away with just changing the filter 2times a year and the oil once. Most engine damage comes from particulates rather then from worn oil. The only porblem with that though is the soot content from combustion, yet a secondary oil filter with a finner degree of filtration would be ideal.
