  • Suspension suggestions

I've searched and read and done all that stuff and I'm still lost. So I was hoping the fine people at New Vee Dub could point me in the right direction.

I'm looking for a set of coils for my car. The reason for coils is that this car will be driven in the winter and summer, so I'd like to have the option of raising it in the winter, and dropping it in the summer.

I have a set of 17's right now, but I will be looking to upgrade to a set of 18's in the near future (if that might affect what suspension I should choose). So I don't want to feel every bump in the road, but at the same time have a nice firm ride.

Price wise, I'm not exactly too sure. I don't want to be cheap and get something that I wown't be pleased with. So I'd like to invest into my suspesion, but not go overboard.

    Any advice would be welcome.

well i don't own coils at all so i may just be flapping my lips but from my first hand experience on here from alot of people is that coils in canada are absolutely useless if you drive your car in winter.. they will end up seizing on you and you won't be able to adjust them anymore.. i know this has happened to 3 people here with coilovers all ranging in brands too.. i'd just get a cupkit and take your kit off in the winter or buy a sick 500-2000$ winter beater

I ran my H&R coils through winter with no problems. You just have to make sure you put a crapload of anti-sieze compound on them when you install them. That being said, I wouldn't buy coil-overs again. I'm quite happy with my cup kit.

My range of coilovers is all pretty pricy..PSS 9s and H & R. FK seems to have the cheapest around, for which I would definately suggest AMI or even C1.

If you're goin FK, go AMI for sure, they hooked me up for cheaper than C1 could with the cost of shippin included from ontario and jason was great to deal with. Also, C1 doesn't have MKIV applications for fk cup kits on their website anymore (this is not to say they can;t get them, just pointing it out)

                Re: Suspension suggestions

I do not know how helpful is my opinion but is just a piece of advice here. If you decide to go with the coilovers make sure you do the maintenance once a month. What I will do is to do cleanup, make sure the perch can turn freely and apply lube to the coilover body. If you can religiously spare the time to do the maintenance then your coilovers set will last you longer( longer to an extend but not FOREVER ). Whether you will do that yourself or pay somebody to do it for you is another question. There are lots of people can afford a set of coilovers but reluctant for the necessary maintenance. When the threads and perch seized up then they start bitchxing they will never buy the same brand ever..ever.. again emergency #1111 or completely quit using coilovers on their ride.

IMO even the most costly coilovers set is not that expensive if you are serious about how you want the car can handle. What comes after the coilovers are the time and maintenance cost to your own.

My recommendation to the quality and real suspension engineering company BRANDs are the big four: Bilstein, H&R, Koni and Ohlins. From my experience on Golf/Jetta impressed me most was the Bilstein PSS9. Depends on what you think, I always have the impression that the dampers(shocks) are more important than the springs.

Yes, I used coilovers set in the past( not on my current Jetta ) but I am not crazy with it any more because of the reasons stated the above. One last reason drive me further away is the weight of the coilovers generally heavier than a spring and shock combo.

                My choice:
                1. Bilstein PSS9
                2. H&R PCS
                3. H&R
                4. Koni

Please don’t ask me why FK not on my list. I can’t afford a flame suit here. It cost me bling bling and also some people here will label me as I come to this club to SELL instead of sharing the fun within the club.

Not to fear if the perch seized up to the thread body. You just need to use one of these to crack them free. ->
