But I'd probably look for an '02 1.8T so that your'e not stuck with the 30hp deficit right off the bat.
actually, the 150hp versions of the 1.8T are knowsn to produce much higher torque figures and hold their own against surging...so i'd say the 150hp non ko3 sport would be the way to go...i just hope you know what you're getting yourself into if you plan on bringing in a vehicle from the United States...
if no, then i can let you in on all the little "hidden agenda" items you need to accomplish, i've done it twice now
I think the main reason to get the older 1.8T is that its drive by cable rather than drive by wire. However, it depends on how far you plan on pushing your mods, if you are just getting some bolt ons or a chip the 180hp engine codes are a little quicker.

I have a 2001 Wolfsburg, so maybe i can answer a few questions for you. PM me. I haven't had the car for very long, but I've been doing a LOT of reading.
Somebody correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe only the 150hp AWD code engines are DBC. The 150hp AWW code engine is DBW (like mine). As far as i know, all 2001 Wolfsburgs have AWW engines. I also know that AWW engines have the K03 Sport turbo, which is apparenly a K03 shell with some K04 internals (not sure what exactly).
Watch for crappy syncros (check out vwvortex in the search area). The AWWs also have a different final drive than the later model '02s and such.
i have to say that I really love my Wolfsburg. The suspension is great (until i can afford something a bit more performance oriented) and the seats are fantastic . . . I also like the BBS rims, though there have apparently been problems with pitting from certain cleaning solutions (not sure which ones). If the rims on the car you're looking at aren't pitted, it pretty much follows that you don't have to worry because you've got a ride with the coating on the rims.
Now for the best part of my day at work - - - THE DRIVE HOME!!!!

Reason: all '01 Wolfsburgs have AWW engines
___________ Black 2001.5 Jetta WE Beast from the East
I'd spend more time with my girlfriend, but she's only naturally aspirated.
All north american 1.8Ts including the AWD are DBW. I know because I own one.
Other than that, you've got it pegged. Enjoy the car!
