I was pondering (<---had to use that word!), has anyone changed their stock monsoon components (speakers/tweeters) with aftermarket stuff, retaining the OEM head/amp?? And have there been any good results with this?? I figure some good high end components might clean it up a bit, but I'm unsure of the ratings and resistance of the OEM stuff....I'm sure Brent would be a big help here.......Maybe some suggestions??

Re: stock audio components vs. aftermarket
I was just reading similar comments on the vortex. Apparently switching speakers in a Mk IV is a right pain in the ass. Most suggest a new head unit/amp/sub. Personally, I would like to leave my head unit (not even monsoon) stock and add an amp and small sub but I don't know the first thing about car audio.Yuval

Re: stock audio components vs. aftermarket
I know a little about the Monsoon system... I have one and researched it when I got my car. I decided not to screw with it because I didn't have enough money to fix it all.
The problem with the Monsoon system is that it's completely proprietary. The crossovers are built into the amp (as opposed to standard passive crossovers in non-monsoon setups). Also, the rear woofers are 2 ohm rather than 4 ohm like the rest of the system.
What does this mean in English? Well, forget about replacing components without replacing the amp as well. Also forget about replacing the amp only as the impedence of the 2 rear woofers is different than the rest of the system.
If anyone is reading this and is wondering "should I get the Monsoon"? The answer is a definite no. It is MUCH easier to upgrade the sound system without Monsoon. You also can't just put in a Monsoon amp because of the crossovers/impedence stuff.
Admittedly, it has been a few years since I checked into this stuff, but i'm pretty sure this is how it works.Last edited by Billip; 03-22-2005, 04:16 PM.billip

Yeah, I'm kinda frustrated with the sound, it should be far better.....2006 Colorado Xtreme | AEM CAI | Walker exhaust | smoked glass | -1" dropped rear | Avic D3 | 8000K HID's

Re: stock audio components vs. aftermarket
this reminds me of pulling my speakers in my corrado out and realizing the deck was line level to the speaker and the amp for each side was on the BACK OF THE SPEAKER. I generally think you're best off to change everything if you're gonna change speakers, that's the only way it'll sound good, not wreck anything.Jay

Bart is right...
Basically, you either replace everything - all speakers, amp, AND headunit at ONCE or you just leave it alone. If I had to do it all over again I would not touch anything or else just do it all.
From what I have read the OEM headunit is a major weakness though - keeping it would be a mistake... unless you also have the OEM nav unit.Last edited by Kor; 03-22-2005, 05:52 PM.KR

Re: stock audio components vs. aftermarket
I'm still very happy with Ryans old Sony Xplode head unit with factory speakers, compared to stock (skipped monsoon after reading about it). Pretty happy with it, unless of course someone sold me a nice in-dash dvd/mp3 rig. Nicer than the BMW 3 series executive package IMO.

Re: stock audio components vs. aftermarket
One of my buddys owns a car stereo shop and he has a set up waiting for me it will use the factory amp. He is going to use focal components, he has done a couple of mkIV this way he says. From what I have seen I dont think I would want to try to take out the factory speakers in the front doors. on the pure reason that you would have to (A) make new speaker pods for the tweeters. (B) cut out the old and put in the new.
And we are changing out the head unit also
Hope this helps ya out if at all
BTW nice use of pondering
