  • Just got Upsoluted!

I thought that I would post my initial impressions of the install and the chip. First off, Simon is a great guy. I went to his place on Sunday at 11am and was driving off in just over an hour. Everything went very smoothly during the install. He is very qualified to do the work. The only hitch was the bloody knuckle that Simon got when pulling the ECU.

I took it for a quick test drive and everything seemed good.

Once I left and did more "testing" I am noticing the dreaded "surge". Mind you, it is not really all that noticeable by feel. However, on my boost gauge, when I was WOT, it would get up to around 16/17 psi, drop to about 12/13, then back up to 16/17 psi. I was only chipped for about an hour or two at the time. I've done some research and things usually don't settle down for a few days. Simon said that he has noticed this also. I will give it a few days and update this post. I did notice that this morning it felt stronger and might have possibly had less surge but my drive was too short to really tell. If it is still surging by the end of the week, my best guess would be the N75 valve (see my other post) or the DV. I really don't think it is the DV (yet) as I am showing the correct amount of boost on my gauge (1 bar=14.5psi).

Anyway, to make a long story short....Simon is a great installer, and the chip is worth the money. Hopefully the surging goes away or the N75 valve fixes it. I'll post more later.

the surges could be the ecu still trying to learn everything again. I imagine that will clear up. The computer could be trying to overide the boost initially to protect itself. I could be talking out my ass too. If you DV is going, you'll hear honking and you'll hear it blowing off.

Chris (at least I think alien is Chris), I think you are right about the learning. That is my take on it right now. I will give it this week to see if it clears up before I try anything.

Chris, will a leaking DV equate to a loss of boost? If that is the case, it will be easy to trouble-shoot with the boost gauge.

I'd say it took about 3-4 days for my car to see the extra air from my intake pipe, so it's probably learning to deal with the extra air from the added pressure.

A leaking DV will result in loss of boost. you'll hear it too. the "pffff pfff" sound will happen when you are at WOT, if it's bad enough, you'll hear a honking sound. I don't know anything about the N75 valves so I cannot offer you any advice there.

I'd like to see a chipped and a boost controlled 1.8T in action...still trying to decide which way I'm gonna go, although I like the features of the APR chip...

Ian, I was thinking I will drop by next week sometime. I would like to clear up any surging problems first. I'll keep you updated.
