  • Modding the airbox.... a little differently

I got the idea for this last summer when I was playing around with my step-dads S2000. I opened up the airbox and found it used a cone filter inside the airbox. To me this seemed like a pretty neat idea, getting the large surface area and flow benefits of a cone filter, with the heat shielding effects of the airbox. So i decided to have a go at it, and I think it turned out pretty well. Keep in mind I still have some more sanding to do to smooth things out, as well as take town the rest of the ribs inside the airbox, but so far I like it.

It sounds good without being as loud as your typical CAI, and because there is no long pipe for the air to travel down, throttle response is excellent! Plus best of all, looking from the top of the engine, it looks 100% stock!

Even though it looks like it sucks hot engine air, that cutout mod has been done and shown to perform quite well just because of the increase in volume. However those ones posted on vortex tended to use a K&N or some other flat panel filter.

Although I have to ask - if you cut a giant hole like that in the bottom, why did you bother to put the baby filter on the backup snorkel as opposed to just capping it off?

I don't get it. But props for modding.

        How much is the filter?

wouldn't that open end in the filter suck in a mouse or something?

Funny, I thought about something like this last week, except I was pondering if I could find a cone that would fit in the stock airbox without having to add any holes...then you may get the best of both worlds: the cold air being funnelled in, and the benefits of the cone filter.

I guess I'm asking: did the cone fit in the stock airbox without cutting a hole in it?

I bought the filter last year at Autobraun and I honestly can't remember how much it was. The filter fits in the airbox without gutting the bottom, you just have to trim some of the little ribs on the inside of the top portion of the box to get it to sit in properly.

As far as putting the filter on the breather, I had the mini filter sitting around so I figured I'd use it.
